Special place awaits young Sea Eagles

The 2017 Sea Eagles Harold Matthews team will achieve a special place in the Manly history books on Saturday, irrespective of the Grand Final result.

Coached by Brett Fulton, this Sea Eagles team have the honour of being the first club side to contest a Harold Matthews Grand Final since the competition began in 1970.

The Sea Eagles finished the regular season in fifth place with six wins from eight games before producing three quality victories in the finals series to earn a place in the season decider against Newcastle.

Loved Daniel Gartner.....he is exactly the type of player we need on our edges right now- awesome player.

He looks like he'd be a better fullback for the Dogs than Will is now, even as a Harold Matthews level player.

YES. He's very impressive. However, it highlights the poor tackling style of rugby league players these days in general - which is particularly noticeable at the top level. They almost always go high, trying to wrap up the ball. Their focus is not on felling the opposition player with a low tackle.
I understand the rationale, but the low tackle used to be one feature of the sport. Jake does it occasionally, but a 'tackle' these days is more of a dance where you hold up your opponent until a teammate comes in low.
Beaver was a great tackler, and others that come to mind were Ronnie Gibbs, Alan Thompson and Ian Martin.

100% correct - the defenders hit high to shut down the ball and allow 2-3 more tacklers in to dominate the attacker onto his back, to slow down that ruck area.... Gives me the sh*** that there's no reward for the copybook legs tackle and if you watch Jakes PERFECT technique - the refs are straight up him "MOVE, OFF" after dropping the attacker single handed on the spot.
Also watch Taumoulolo when they attempt this, his legs keep pumping and carries them 30 metres downtown.....the best tackles are the old school legs all day, but are being drained out of the game due to Wrestling BS.

It's not in the highlights but I have a cousin who plays for Harold Matthew's Manly team, he told me he's a incredible player with a bright future but needs to pass the ball more. I like Albert and he has a great future but I think Turbo's got fullback covered. I think when Uate moves on, he'll be his replacement.

I'll never forget Igor. He's the brother-in-law of one of my lifelong friends. Igor tackled to hurt. I was more alluding to the classically low tacklers who's sole purpose was to cut a runner down and stop a movement. From other clubs I'm thinking of Ron Coote, Steve Mortimer, Les Johns and Jimmy Lisle.
In my opinion a diving, grass-cutting tackle in cover defence is every bit as thrilling as an incisive run.

Fatty Vautin ? And totally correct assessments , regarding the modern tacking style , but i doubt that it will revert to the more traditional style , anytime soon , unfortunately . Just glad that we have Jake T. to show how it can still be done . Just so effective . Also i just don"t see TOM at this stage , as a natural transition - back line to back row type player . But as an explosive running full back , of coarse he would hardly have a peer at the present time . Hopefully Ben T can join Jake in the pack in a few years .

I had this argument as a coach when the boys went 4-5 passes wide- they had opened the opposition up with silky passes...our fullbackback state runner was in the clear - closest support 10 metres back .
While he was called out by other parents to pass the ball I told him, in that situation in the clear with zero support if he waits for a player to catch up, standing still I would hook him.
He finished plenty like young Hoppa and will be 1 to watch.
There's an old saying still rings true.
Only pass to someone in a better position than you.
