Sure this flat game with passes at the advantage line is part of the modern game.
The still attack that middle third to bring in defenders and provide space out wide.
Then when a shift is on, they are fanned our wide and most importantly “DEEP”
This gives time for the players to be moving at speed into a hole and the fullback time to move into space off the ball....and make the defence turn in, to provide that 3 on 2....even 3 on 1 situation out wide.
To change it up they always have the option to play short and direct when the defence is sliding and numbered up - this gives Creighton/Sam Burgess a 1 on 1 with an unprotected halfback.
There is none of this “clunky” play, because they have time and space to adjust shape to break down whatever defensive line is in front.
Not a Souths fan, but are clearly the sharpest attack in the NRL and to see Manly continually looking lost in good attacking positions, maybe more time and space could really help Kelly, Tom T and Walker utilise their sharp footwork rather than standing flat footed waiting for an offload.
