Des Haslers comments regarding a team still getting a point after being beaten in extra time with the winning side getting an extra point has a lot of sympathy in many quarters as it seems patently unfair that a side who is square after 80 minutes is treated the same as a team beaten by 50.

The main (and correct)argument mounted against this is that we are then creating a game which results in more points on offer than is usual for a normal fixture. I agree that we shouldn't have more points on offer simply because of a draw.

A simple and easy way to fix the situation whereby

1.we are not issuing extra points solely because of a draw
2.we are rewarding a side for being square after 80
3 the winning side gets a bonus for winning in extra time but does not achieve the same result as a side that wins outright
4 the excitement of extra time is maintained (which should be a full 10 minutes with tries the only points on offer and penalties differential)

is to move the soccer system whereby a win generates 3 points. This would mean an outright win equates to 3 points, an extra time win 2 points, an extra time loss 1 point and a 90 minute draw 1 point each.It would also have the added bonus of reducing the chance a side misses the semis on for and against.A scoring system like the above would rarely result in ties after 26 rounds.

This system would better reflect the achievement of both sides and prevent the ludicrous situation of the warriors getting the same result against Penrith as we did against the Dogs and not have a situation where extra points are created for a draw.

The only better scenario is to go back the good old days where a draw is a valid outcome and each side gets 1 point

The NRL have a duty of care for the Players - playing an extra 10 minutes disadvantages both Teams for their following games.

I don't know why, probably TV, that the Golden Point was brought in, but the fatigue/injuries of the Players was not considered.:-/

The ARLC are being duped by their Competitors into bastardising their Product. 😡
The TV ratings are the highest for RL and especially the SOO.
It is comparable to the Melbourne Cup - everyone watches, regardless of their preferred football code.

Leave our Game alone and put resources into training up the Referees and standardising the MRC penalties :idea:

Draws are a lot more common in soccer, hence the points system. I don't think we need to worry too much with the points set up in the NRL.

If they are going to stick with golden point then they should look at how the games are decided in that overtime period. Field goals are boring.

I was thinking that they could make it that you have to get a lead by more than 2 to end the game immediately. That way 1 or 2 field goals or 1 penalty goal allows the game to continue. However score a try if your opposition are on 0 or 1 and you win, or if they have kicked a penalty goal then you have to convert the try to win on the spot.

If neither team gets to a more than 2 point lead then once extra time is complete the team that is leading is the winner, or if scores are tied then we make it a draw.

This way you can concede a couple of field goals or a penalty goal and still be in the contest, and have more incentive to go for a try. The danger with not rewarding penalty goals (as in golden try) is that teams deliberately infringe, but in this case 2 penalty goals will pretty much win you the match so teams still need to play within the rules.

This system rewards teams that go for the try, but also rewards field goals and penalty goals if you think you can defend that lead for the full extra time.

Just a thought.

The above soccer solution is as good as any idea thats been put on the table so far. Still believe the ONLY way extra time should be cut short is scoring a try.
As an example after that 32-30 lead on Friday night Manly could still snatch a win with a try & teams would not be out to milk penalties or just set for the Field goals, instead playing positive footy aiming at scoring a try.

At the moment if you draw every game you end the reg season on 28 points, 24 single points for draws and 4 points from two byes. and probably make the 8 having never won a game. Not likely but possible.

In my opinion only a try ends extra time, otherwise fieldgoals and penalties only count for the end of extra time.

So if a team is prepared to give away penalties to stop tries being scored and the opposition kick 3 or 4 penalty goals, then how is it fair if they then score a lucky try in the last seconds of extra time and get the win ??

That's all fine in theory. But still no guarantee of a result in golden point ie Manly v Storm.

That's right. And that's why my understanding is that the NRL's preferred approach to deal with the issue is to stop keeping score at all. That way all players can all receive a participation award at the end of the game and everybody goes home a winner (even Cronulla players).

Get rid of Golden Point it's rubbish , and yes I would have the same opinion if we had won both of ours this year.

A side gets flogged by 50 and puts in a miserable effort , gets the same reward for a team that plays out a bruising , intense game that's full of effort and guts which ends in draw after 80 minutes. Only difference is the team getting flogged by 50 doesn't have to go through the nonsense of GP fiasco to end up with 0 points for their effort.

Its not very often a drawn game is not a good game , so a point a piece is more than fair .
