As you all know yesterday we had some issues with our DNS. At the same time we identified an issue with the way PHP was executing scripts. It was essentially running them as nobody and we needed them to be ran as "user".
we rebuilt PHP and fixed the DNS issues. We then enabled the new PHP module and tried to start the server this failed so we went back and revers some of what we had done.
I realised the issue was due to file ownership and then went to recursively change the owner and group of all the silvertails files......i was tired and made my biggest administrative mistake in years....I changed the owner ship of every file on our server
This meant the database and everything, the only fix was to slowly rebuild enough permissions to make a backup and from there reformat and rebuild the entire server..yep the whole thing, I was up until just after 4 and at that point decided I jsut couldn't stay up in order to get the servers running anymore so went to bed and just restored the site then.
The last problem is that the default install does not contain things like cURL and mbstring which we use for things like twitter. So I am just rebuilding PHP doing a restart and we are back underway.
Sorry for all the screw ups of late, this one will be the last....for at least a month
