Sironen or Winterstein?

Sirro definitely had a poor game against the Knights, that simple drop ball off the attacking scrum is a coach killer.

Needs to improve his butter fingers.

Siro has a higher ceiling but also a lower floor than Frank.

Can't believe people are questioning Thompson after one game. He might not have had the best game but I think he stiffened up our LHS, I don't recall the Knights scoring on that side. He is also on a rookie 5/8 side of the field so he probably isn't going to get a lot of opportunity in Round 1. Admittedly I was distracted somewhat whilst watching the game on Friday so I can't confess to paying as much attention to the action as I would normally. But his stats didn't look too bad. His pedigree is better than Frankenstein and Shady
Agreed, he had almost no pre-season with the team so we need to cut him some slack.

I think we were all expecting Thompson to kill it and i was looking for him sometimes , but he will ease in . Its not like he had a shocker , probably just expected to much . If he scores 3 points by judges a few times throughout the year ill be happy.

Thommo was fine in my eyes.

Took the call up strongly, wasn't dominated in the tackle and defended well.

Not his fault that Croker didn't pass him the ball more often.

Same criticism of Winterstein last year. It's not their fault they didn't see any ball. Our attacking structure is different to other teams as mentioned by @Woodsie. We seem to under utilise our 2nd row for whatever reason.

I think he did fine to ... My only comment is that the competition for his spot may be stronger than people have given credit for ....

He's not a "kill it" kind of guy. Can find the line sure but he's more a very steady type than someone that will blow you away week after week. And that's the role we need him to play. There are plenty of others who can dazzle. Some guys just need to do the grunt work.

Our overall game structure doesn't utilise our 2nd rowers in attack as much as other teams ... eg at Easts Cordner is a go-to guy ...

I had a gut feel that this would change a bit with a new 5/8 and Thommo on board but it hasn't ... early days so it still might ... but with all the ball playing in the middle, it just further reduces the workload on the edges.

Barrett's style of play as a coach pretty much mirrors when he was playing. Back when he was running around his back rowers were basically just defensive workhorses and decoy runners, they didn't see a lot of ball because Baz would either run it himself or use his centre/winger more often. And since he has become Manly coach that is how it has been, especially on the left edge.

Marty Taupau was wasted in the back row in 2016 because Walker and even Killer rarely used him in attack. Frank didn't see much ball last year and mainly did decoy runs and on Friday night Thompson hardly saw the ball in attack. On the other hand over on the right, Cherry has always used his back rowers. Choc, T-Rex, T-Red, Horo and Siro saw/see plenty of the football in comparison.

Sirro by a fair stretch, though started slow in 2017 also and I base that on his form when he was peaking before injury....he played a poor game last week and made key poor plays at vital times to help give them early momentum, then when we earned it back, Sirro stepped up again with a dropsicle 10m out off a scrum that led directly to another Knights try...
When On song it’s a no brainer, but on his form game 1, sure Barrett has had that chat.

In Barrett's day there was far less (minimal) structure in place, and most 2nd rower's workload depended more on how many times they put their hand up or made the run ..... at Manly last year it was almost as if they were nailed into their place in the line and told not to deviate for any reason.

I put this down more to Baz the new generation coach .. more than I put it down to any previous style he played .. if successful it may be the new evolution in style that other teams copy .. or it may go down as a good idea at the time.

I think Baz does have a big picture of the "style" he would like us to play in his head ... might just take the players a while to get it right.

The one name missing in this thread in GojetSki .... does anybody know how he went in reggies .... is he a contender?

I’m liking the look of Lane being used in the middle. I watched frank at the grounds a bit last year, and to me he looked very slow laterally, easily wrong footed. It’s been one game, sirro will come good.

Sirro for sure, he has a higher ceiling than winterstein and is quite younger, so a better long term option also.

I’d give the team more time to gel, I certainly saw what everyone else saw, but Thommo will get better the more games he gets with his new pack.
I loved the sight of Shaun Lane out there! He played like he knew how big he was! Reminded me of a Brent Kite blinder at Brookie as well as a Penrith game last year where Regan Campbell Gillard played the whole 80 mins carrying players on his back all up the field. Also like a dominant Dave Klemmer in his Toyota cup days (he was a freak in that age division).
Lane evoked memories of those games, I know he wasn’t out there for 80 mins but he looked every bit the impact prop I expected Taniela Paseka could develop into.
Sozzzz for all the name drops and Lane love on a Joel Thompson thread but my mind got racing ; )
