That ad was my first real memory of Rugby League. We migrated to the northern beaches from Ireland in 1991... instantly took up supporting the local team , without a single clue about what the sport was.
The tina Turner angle meant my mum loved it too.... and that was that. Life long Eagles fan

Thanks Tina - you were simply the best.

No doubt about it, the Tina Turner campaigns were so effective and awesome for rugby league in Australia and thanks for those wonderful memories.

RIP Tina Turner...you're simply the best!

'She didn't change': Why rugby league fell in love with Tina Turner

It was the advert that brought glamour to a game on the rise and epitomised what rugby league was truly about.

People like to put names to faces but if ever there was a song that made rugby league familiar to the masses, then Tina Turner's "What You Get Is What You See" was it. It gave the game a mainstream identity in 1989, laying the platform for the game's golden years in the early 90s before the Super League storm split the game.

The song was perfect for the campaign because it spoke to the athletes playing the game, working class men playing a brutal sport with no regard for their bodies, giving the code a ballad it could pin its virtues on. And it worked.

What a beautiful, strong, resilient woman. I'd recommend the show based on her life to people if you haven't seen it.

When someone like Janis Joplin says Tina Turner is her favourite artist, you know there's talent absolutely everywhere.

Great story behind that photo

Ettingshausen was meant to be the player there, Gavin Miller had organised it, but ETs game got postponed due to snow, so Leeds wouldn’t release him so Miller said to John Quayle that he had it all sorted, and 2 players would go. Tina Turner had been promised the sexiest man in League, and Miller and Cliffy walked in the doors. When Quayle turned up she said “if these are the good looking ones, I’d hate to see the ugly ones”
