Norths sign Mullane

Jye Mullane, in action for the Manly Sea Eagles, has been signed by Norths.
NORTHERN Suburbs will have the potential to field a representative-strength backline next season after making another key signing.
Talented inside back Jye Mullane last week agreed to terms with Norths for 2007, which will not only boost their attacking prowess but strengthen their mid-field defence.
Mullane's switch from Southern Districts brings him back across the Harbour Bridge.
The 25-year old first came to prominence earlier this decade with the Cronulla rugby league club, where his father Mick was a long-serving fullback during the 1970s, before joining Manly.
The younger Mullane then made a suprise defection to rugby union at the end of last year, but his conversion was immediately successful.
Despite playing in a Souths unit that finished in the bottom half of the table, he was the leading tryscorer in this year's Tooheys New Cup with 14 to his name.
Mullane also played a significant role in Norths suffering their first defeat in the TNC when the Rebels surprised them with a 33-13 victory in round 6 under lights at North Sydney Oval.
His form in 2006 earned him a berth in the extended NSW Waratahs squad.
``Having a player of Jye's ability and experience at top level footy to throw into our backline mix is a great addition,'' enthused Norths head coach Darren Coleman.
``He has great speed and footwork and is very aggressive in defence from his NRL days.''
Mullane's acquistion gives the Shoremen an extremely impressive looking roster.
They already boast Adam Ashley-Cooper, who is currently on tour with the Wallabies, NSW utility Sam Norton-Knight, Australian Schoolboys whiz-kid Kurtley Beale, Australian Sevens rep Jordan Macey and Waratah Academy member Steve Evans.
Alas, it is unlikely that they will ever get the chance to play alongside each other in red and black because of varying representative rugby commitments and the likely re-structure of the Sydney first grade scene that is necessitated by the new national competition.
Also bolstering the club's backline depth is the signing of former NSW Country utility Justin Wheatley, who has played over 60 first grade matches with Eastwood.
The Shoremen have also shored up their forward grunt.
Manly prop Stu Wilson, who has been a part of the Waratahs A line-up, has made the move across the Spit Bridge to fill the breech left by Troy Takiari, who has won a contract with the Western Force.
Norths' other notable off-season recruit is former Canberra Vikings backrower Simon Hockings, who has represented Australia at under-16s & under-21s level.
