To spare readers of the Jake thread, over here this won't bother anyone.

General topic – sexist tropes vs Virtue signalling, aka ‘One of these days …’

Never saw that show but everyone's heard the line, it was no doubt hilarious in the day, maybe not so much now?

Anyhow this thread could be for any alleged racism/wokeness/virtue signalling/culture war discussions in general, which let's face it are often front and centre in recent times. Ideal for a wet week, or a disappointing footy season.

Quick note to start…

My original comment in the Jake thread was addressed not to @Brookie1973 , though I did quote your comment, but to Bozo. I took your comment Brookie to be a lighthearted joke (and on that, I like that you often try to bring some humour to the forums).

It was directed at Bozo because – and I expect he’ll agree with this – he is the most unashamedly openly sexist person on Silvertails, and he picked up your joke and ran with it. Hence I thought worthy to pass on the comment I’d heard. Maybe I should have quoted Bozo’s post not yours, although you did set it up, so… anyway.

Interesting that Bozo shook it off with a laugh, whereas you and John OnlythewestisBest were both highly offended (to the point Brookie has quit the forum in protest at my bullying!) (after a spectacular Silvertails career of over 1000 posts in less than 2 months, impressive)

In any case, let's leave the Jake thread to Jake

I thought it was a good point made that some people have a problem with a poster making a light hearted toungue-in-cheek comment about their own partner but will contribute to the verbal abuse a poster like BOZO cops every day. If not contributing then at least letting it happen without saying anything which is just as bad? e.g. I took the comment that BOZO needs to get checked for CTE as a light hearted joke which is how I took Brookies. - If we are going to take always take things literal & not have a sense of humour then why isn’t there a problem asking someone if they they are suffering traumatic brain injuries because of how they want to post? (Personally I have no problem with either & thought GE post was funny, just a easy example as it was in the same thread)

I think society in general just need to ****ing chill out a bit and stop looking to take offence at every little thing. Comedians aren't allowed to be funny anymore in case they upset someone. Workplaces are a minefield, having to think so long whether what you're about to say will get you in trouble that you just don't bother saying anything. My daughter is a teacher and one of her roles is the head of diversity and inclusion. I get a lot of eye rolls and "you can't say that" whenever we meet up.
The world has changed a lot from when I was a young bloke. A small part for the good but mainly not. I'm just glad I'm in my 50's because the future looks pretty bleak

Thanks Ohgeez and UK, thoughtful comments.

On ‘comedians aren’t allowed to be funny anymore’… or is it simply that what is considered funny can change over time (with the Sundowners line a striking example)?

I know we’re all only here for the Sea Eagles, and any attempt at humour is worth a try. But are you really saying that means no-one is allowed to say “Oh by the way there’s another side to that common line”?

We do exactly that in all our discussions of everything footy - which covers not only tackling techniques and team selections but also morality (DCE?) and every social issue that arises. From Leniu to Mam and everything in between.

Putting alternative views adds to the depth of any of those discussions, and isn't of itself an attack or personal abuse.

I see you liked the passing of a Cheers actor. Did you like that series? It's very sexist if we use the measuring stick you seem to apply. What about Benny Hill, Mash, Monty Python? They should all be placed on the bbq and doused in gasoline if we use your sexism standard to judge them.

Hearing someone referred to as "they" really scattered my mind the first time it happened. I stood around waiting for her mate to appear. Especially as the conversation continued and the "they" pronoun continued to be used. I eventually caught on and jokingly asked my niece where her friends friend was hiding when we were in my car. The look of rage on my niece's face told me all I needed to know.

I didn’t mean I liked that he was dead. I just said Cheers because that was his famous show, and as ‘thanx for posting news of it’. But yes I realise death can be a touchy topic so sorry if I caused upset to anyone, I’ll try to be more sensitive in that thread.

I didn't take it as you liking his death. I presumed you were a fan of the show.

Why do you think they should be scrapped? Or, why do you say I think they should be scrapped?
Aren't they from the 1960s or 70s, if so probably a bit dated, maybe they won't get quite as many laughs nowadays?
Do you think I want to ban stuff?

Young people seem to think you have an agenda if you call someone him/her when they want to be called "they". To me it's simple, if they're male it's him, if they're female it's her.
I went to watch the comedian Mick Miller last year (I'm not sure if he's known in Aus) and he was on the same subject. Said he's fed up with Sam Smith the whiny "singer" moaning that people keep calling him "him" as he identified as neither male nor female. A hard kick in the balls should help him decide was Mick's solution.

Wouldn't say a fan but I've seen some episodes, can't remember enough to know what sexist parts are in it but if it was made last century I'm sure there's some! Because culture and ideology aren't constant, I assume you agree about that. I thought the episodes I saw were fine at the time but can't remember what they were about.
Maybe to give you a better idea of how I see culture/art - when I was a kid I read all the Sherlock Holmes books, loved them. I re-read one just last year and it struck me there were very few female characters, and the ones that were there sort of 'dumb' stereotypes. I never picked that up as a kid because the society values I learned as a kid didn't include the degree of awareness s about gender inequalilty issues that we have today. You might agree?

Yes, I think you might be pleased to see things banned, or posters blocked.

Your vendetta against @BOZO is obvious. I understand that we all have different views and opinions. It goes beyond left v right. Mostly, we get it wrong when faced with opposing views. We take it too personally. As I have said before @lsz is a guy who presents his opinion very well. There is humility in his approach and a fair mindedness in his rejection of ideas that are not aligned with his own. Which is why he's a moderator I guess. Put it this way, he has made me question some of my own ideas. Not just because he makes valid points, but also because he is less combative than the rest of us.

@lsz is a beacon of patience and reason in these parts, agree with you there.

No idea why you think I want to ban things though, or block posters.

I've never put anyone on ignore.
And I was a mod here for years, and actually recall arguing with other mods on occasion, saying no don't delete that 'offensive' stuff, because I'd rather it be there and visible so it can be openly debated and exposed, rather than pretend it never happened.
(and of course one of the best things about this site is the policy of Dan and the mods to largely leave it to posters to self regulate. As if they were adults.

Ps why don't you tell your mate to come back and not to be so sensitive.
(and he was worried about Bozo, so you might also reassure him Bozo seems just as chipper as ever, another 20+ posts in his irrepressible style )

I think people will always think different with every generation
Politically correct views do not apply to all People
Its like the Old Rock and Roll music which is surpassed by many generations of music is till enjoyed by many young people for example
This is why Elvis Still Lives 🙂

Take it Away Sideburns ,,,,
Oh, well, a-bless my soul, but what's wrong with me?
I'm itchin' like a man on a fuzzy tree
My friends say I'm actin' wild as a bug
I'm in love
I'm all shook up
Hmm, ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah

My take on all our feathered friends on our Great forum
We all have one common Great trait and that is passionate views for our Club
Passionate people with passionate views are fiery people
and sometimes we all get a bit too fired up with each other
But I do believe from reading all peoples posts on here
They are all Good People
And good people dont always agree with each other
But they are still Good people

Well, I am just presenting my own thoughts. It doesn't mean they're accurate. Perhaps you are more like the many who enjoy going back and forth in search of a gotcha moment.

I would like him to come back. His contributions were excellent.

But beyond exchanging our views on here, (and residing near the Nepean River) we don't know each other personally.
