Second tier players

The Who

Journey Man
I've been watching RL for 55 years-plus but I still don't understand the second tier player system.
With our recent injuries can we use a player from the lower grades who is not in our 28/30 as a replacement? I appreciate that his salary would have to be counted in the cap, but if we are still under then surely this would be allowed.
A simple explanation would be appreciated.

You can only use players in your Top 30 squad. However, you can apply to use someone else but have to persuade our mate Toddy to let that occur.
We still have vacant spots in our Top 30, because we were allowed extra time to settle our squad due to the salary saga. We have 28, as per the club site.
I'd say we have Buckley's chance of being allowed to use someone outside that 28, unless it is in a position we can't cover.
So for now, if we want to use someone else (eg Fainu) we need to add them to our NRL squad.
(This is all my guess only!!)

Baz might want to buy in 2 cheap senior players, rather than rush a young player into the NRL squad.

It's only been a week since Baz knew what his roster budget is for 2018 and 2019 @

choosing players available from our 28, Baz might go with J Gosiewski and Frank W ... or an outside chance of a first grade debut for 'Toff' with M Wright going to fullback & debut for T Funa on the wing or the experienced Jono Wright.

I think Gosiewski and Frank W should fill the gap nicely. I think they'll put M Wright at fullback. When Walker's back? At some stage I'd like to B Kelly at Fullback may be when the Turbos are on origin duties.

Winterstein and lussick our experienced forwards. Logically they are in line to play before blooding a rookie or buying more pkayers.

System changed this year with the new CBA. last year you had a top 25 and a second tier cap of 440k and could use players until that cap second tier space was used.

Now with an extra 5 players (top 30) you cant call players up from second tier. You need special dispensation to use anyone outside the Top 30. This will only be considered if there is no one available in the positions you are applying for dispensation for.

So, who is to decide if a club has run out of options in a particular position. For example, do we have another specialist fullback to cover Turbojet? Sure, we have some others who could fill-in but why couldn't we call in the specialist fullback from the Workers?
Also, this system sucks for those players not in the top 30. It is telling them that no matter how well they are playing in the Intrust Cup/Jersey Flegg that they can't be promoted on merit anytime that season.
No wonder promising juniors move to other clubs promising them a place in the top 30.
What a dud system we currently have!

When the 30 players were chosen as available for first grade, there were also four players identified as something like apprenticeship players. I think these included Anderson and Funa. Are they in any way eligible for first grade?

Could be why trent has left a couple of places available in our top 30. Maybe hes waiting to see how they come along by the mid year in intrust and flegg

It reads like a pool of 36 contracted players are now NRL registered.

Thanks HM. I'm still confused, but that may have something to do with my age.
My question: In our '36' contracted players do we have a specialist fullback as back-up for Turbo?

I don't see the reserve grade regularly anymore, so I can't say.

Baz will sort it!

If 18 year olds can go to war then 20 year olds can play in the NRL
You don't toughen up young men by keeping them in their nappies
Just my opinion feathered friend
