True, but I also think he was at Souths before that and wanted to go to Wests but was forced to go to the Roosters because they introduced a players draft that year and the Roosters had first pick

Hard to believe a decade after 1978 that Gartner was still in first grade at Balmain and scoring tries. Played for Balmain in their 1986 semi final win over Manly. He was in the Tigers team in 1987 that got flogged by 40 points at Brookie. In 1988 Gartner played on the wing in the 8-4 loss to Manly at Brookie. He also played in the Tigers win over Manly in the semi that year. I saw all of those games & until today I would have sworn Gartner wasn't in any of them!
Wikipeadia says he was a reserve for the 1989 grand final but didn't get on the field.

He did. 1982-83. Then he basically retired before then Balmain coach Biscuits Stanton brought him out of mothballs in 1985, ultimately for another five seasons and two more GFs.
