No room for passengers!

NRL clubs are set to favour that rosters be cut by up to four spots while the salary cap could be reduced by 10 per cent as the strain from the COVID-19 crisis continues to bite.
Clubs have been involved in phone hook-ups this week to discuss the position of their rosters for next year and beyond. They have agreed that a reduction from 30 players needs to happen in a bid to keep the clubs to be sustainable.

Among the other small reductions being discussed is a scrapping of the NRL’s marketing fund. The marketing fund pays out money to the 32 most marketable players in the NRL according to the governing body, which is worth $7.5 million across the current five-year collective bargaining agreement.

Also - wth is this? Who gets the cash? Is this counted in the cap or just another left-over from Todd to swing sCam some extra $$$$

So a reduction in the cap by 1 mil but only reducing squad by 4 players?? Interesting how this will work. Id assume we would have 4 development players instead of 6 also. So 26 top players and 4 rookies. What this will mean is we have to be extremely selective with who we keep. No room for players that aren't ready for 1st grade.

Not too sure how this would suit Manly right now with depth an issue already . Thought that the renewed broadcast rights revenue was comparable to the previous level so the present 13 mil or so allocated for player cap and coaching and ancillary costs should be able to be maintained . Additional club operating costs could be another matter with game attendances and so on but again player payments should still be covered . If for example the cap is reduced by 900 k or so , would the higher paid or mid range players be prepared to accept a pay cut to accommodate the much lesser paid squad members . very much doubt it Probably need more specific information on any future or projected revenue or club "s financial positions . A draft and as in past times would have as much chance of being introduced as the Bears being in the comp again .

We have 8 off contract plus Thommo out. Out of these you'd want to re sign Waddell and Cust and Hoppa. So take out the other 6 that leaves 24 already on the books. We have added Harper so 25. We will keep Schuster and Saddler and Ben T so That only leaves us 2 to 4 positions to fill (depending if it's 4 or 6 rookies)
And I haven't included Metcalfe, T rex, Tittmus or Miski.
Looking at this I wouldn't be surprised to see us move on 1 or 2 players that are currently contracted. Otherwise it'll just be another year like this year with no recruitment and no half or outside back depth

Won’t affect the Roosters , they’ll still have a spare set of top line players hidden somewhere.

Would expect young Hamole to come into calculations in the top grade soon or certainly next season . Again can not see why Jake can not just swap with Thommo on the edge and Schuster being the 13 , has all of the skills and ability to do well there , especially with the increased tempo of the game now . Don ;t think that any new forwards need to be acquired , Fainu will be back most likely next season , Harper has been recruited in a similar instance to Musgrove for outside depth back purposes .Young Hoppa to be given an opportunity soon probably as a winger [ unless he is given an opportunity to partner Suli in the centres and can cover full back ] Cust and Croker as the utilities .Just need also the big names to show the way to higher honours and better luck on the injury front .

The Roosters better increase their brown paper bag order or book a few extra slots at Sydney Royal Golf Club a week.

I thought they where talking about adding 1 extra team to the comp, maybe they are thinking of 2 as dropping 4 players a team will allow enough players to cover 2 teams.

I think its a good move to reduce the team back to 26.

Don't think Jake is quick enough to play on an edge.. he is middle player every day of the week

Has played S O O previously for the Blues as an edge forward . surprisingly good speed once in the open as well .No shortage of other prop contenders at the moment and most likely into next season .

I don't recall Jake ever playing back row for blues. He has been picked at prop.
Either way I think Jake is definitely a middle forward although he is one off those guys you could play anywhere.

Really? I don't recall

Only a draft would stop rich clubs like the Roosters, Eels and Storm manipulating the salary cap and get a little equity back into the game..
