Russell Packer

Snake

Snake's Alive!
He is off contract at the Dragqueens; what do we think?

We could move Taupau to Winterstein's edge to give our halves something to use with Packer playing up the middle. The other benefit of moving Taupau to the edge is that he can attract defenders to open spaces out the back for Tom T to run and/or use Kelly and Jorge etc.

Packer is a reliable defender (he produces high tackle counts for a prop), gets good quick play-the-balls because he always lands on his stomach and he is aggressive. He is also only 27 which I prefer to signing James Graham who is over the hill. He will also fit in with the criminal element at the club.

Just an idea.

Rather throw a heap at Vaughan. Would potentially be our Brent Kite steal - with them for 3 years though. Any other big Canberra forwards we could steal?

Not a big fan of Packer as a player. He's nothing special.

Also anyone who pi$$es their pants whilst standing in the middle of a football field has some issues IMO.
I don't think he is anything special but I do think he is solid and would do a good enough job to move Taupau to the edge.

What do you think about moving Taupau and purchasing a prop instead of trying to buy a backrower? There really aren't any worth pursuing at present IMO.

I was going to completely write this off till you said he was 27.
Would be one of those right price players.
Probably 200- 250k.
But he does a props job each week unlike some of the other posers who play that spot these days.
As for his past well it's the ones who haven't been caught that we might sign that I worry about.

Don't know but there are definitely some Panther ones, including Kikau.

I'm not a card carrying member of the "Kapow is only a middle forward" club so I think he has value as an edge forward. But I don't get caught up in this prop/second row semantics - what we need is a good quality middle/fringe forward that can bust the line and offload, or really bend the hell out of it every time he runs - get us on a roll. He can wear 8, 10, 13, 26 or 99 on his back for all I care. I really don't know who is on the market - but if we are looking at guys like Packer and James Graham I can only assume that the cupboard is bare.

I see that they have named that young Tigers forward in this weeks squad - not that he is any hope of getting a run, but that might indicate that they have some hopes for him - and his hype did mention he could be the next Lolo @;)

I'm pretty sure the drags paid $600k a year for him so it might be tough to get him but I agree would rather him as well

Does anyone think that perhaps Manly are staying quiet on the recruitment front for two main reasons:
1. We dont NEED (desperetely) anyone or any position for 2018 onwards. Whilst most of us agree we need a quality second rower to join, it's not like we can't field a side that will compete.
2. (And the main reason for this post) Perhaps this is a recruitment masterstroke. With all the high profile player movement, you can bet your bottom dollar that clubs will be shopping around good players (and paying for a large part of their salary) to be able to accomodate your Cooper Cronks, Jack Birds, Forans, Teddy, Woods etc etc. Perhaps Bozo/Baz are sitting back to see what quality becomes available once the dust settles?? Instead of paying overs, perhaps our new strategy is to pay unders for certain positions and overs to attract key marque players?

Yep, it's a brilliant strategy and they'd also know that next season there are plenty of guns off contract so if no one perfect comes through we'll have plenty in the bank. Our pack doesn't need someone like Packer, we've already begun building for the future with young and reasonably young players in Jamil Hopoate, Sironen, Paseka, AFB, Jake Trbo and Lussick either starting or continuing to develop. We don't need too many experienced players and certainly not of Packers type, id accept James Graham as he can lay a platform for the future pack to build off. Personally as I've stated in a different thread, I would like to try take Napa or JWH from the Rorters should they sign woods and/or Tedesco

They maybe waiting to see who will be in charge of recruitment in the next few months

I seriously thought we were looking to sign Vaughan when he was on the market, may be the dragons had to pay him overs but that's exactly the type of player we need.
