Rugby leagues "Most important" position ??

The inspirational leader in the pack because without a platform and go forward the best halves in the game will be shut down by good sides. We need someone to stand up and inspire the pack in the mold of Ronnie Gibbs, Anthony Whatmough, Glen Stewart and Ben Kennedy. Our pack needs to play with mongrel. Not only do we need to bend the line with the ball we need to crush them in defence. I see Big O as next next potential enforcer. Next is a extremely consistent controlling half like Cronk who plays the game two plays ahead and 9 times out of 10 takes the right options. Everybody else with talent will flourish on the back of this.
i hear you

this season we have close to 20% of cap in 2 players at prop/interchange forward and 7

yet we have neither smarts , or brute

that kind of coin we get , cleary, haas, and utility change and are we a different team then

blending another thread in saying, who is most important, salary cap balancer

Maybe the person responsible for arranging the salary cap...
close, its the person who loves to play golf but can't, who accidentally leaves brown paper bags full of money laying around or maybe he likes to take people fishing is his flash new boat.... then forgets to take it home after dropping the player off at his place so it stays there

You may be correct about the interchange forward but our halfback is worth each and every cent. He s at least number 2 on the comp atm, behind Cleary, but Cleary had youth on his side. Cherry's resilience is outstanding. In fact I think he's our best half ever, behind Tooves of course. Now that's a wrap !

That is a fair comment! Stats of course don't tell the full story, but for what its worth they are comparable.

Tooves
NRL games 286
Premierships 1 (captain)
Grand finals 3
Australia 12 (1 as captain)
Origin (NSW) 15 (3 as captain)
Awards & Accolades: Clive Churchill Medal 1996; Dally M Hooker Of The Year 1999

DCE
NRL games 261
Premierships 1
Grand finals 2
Australia: 15
Origin (Qld) 16 (9 as captain)
Awards & Accolades: Dally M Rookie Of The Year 2011; RLIF Halfback Of The Year 2011, 2013; RLPA Rookie of the Year 2011; Clive Churchill Medal 2013; Dally M Halfback Of The Year 2014

I was busy for a lot of Tooves career but have seen most of DCE's games - it seems to me that DCE is the more skilled but Tooves by far the more talismanic and inspirational.

I like this comment someone added on Toove's Player Project entry

Dave A says: This may sound over the top, but Geoff Toovey would have to be the toughest player in the history of rugby league. i am not a manly fan but even I can still appreciate how he could smash forwards twice his size, cop massive punishment and play on through injury. Great speed and absolutely no mongrel. Fantastic player who could also do your tax return. (03/08/2014)

This was one of the more interesting facets of Woodsie " s player poll [ best Manly players e . t . c ] last pre season and most favored half for Silver tail "s posters . Tooves received the nod but i would still rate D C E as the best all round half , especially when a kicking or general kicking game is taken into account . D C E may never get full marks for his general game management but guess that Tooves would not either , mainly because of the other talented ball players he had around him when he was the Manly half . Tooves would always rate right up there as one of the most gutsiest Manly players ever but again for all round ability and skill , would still slightly opt for D C E

Tooves was the follow me captain the rugby league universe wish for
a player the pack would die for, or die of shame for not keeping the standard

different times maybe

Hard to argue Mr James. We are blessed to have had both these icons play for our mighty club.

Is any one position more important than another? Is a halfback or fullback chiming into the line more valuable than any of the forwards who give those players the room they need to do what they do? Are any of them more important than a winger who often scores the tries that still have to be scored?

The best position on the field for mine is 1–13 when they are working as a cohesive unit.

You are right . All positions are important . Some positions are more dominant than others

Take away a Great the spine and it makes it harder for the rest of the team to shine

100% feathered friend

The combined 6 & 9 position requires Balance , Dedication , Commitment to the task and Great team work .
Ying and Yang is an ancient symbol of balance

And even the best spine in the world is nothing without the forwards doing the hard work and giving them room. Case in point, Origin 2014. For the first time since 2005, NSW dominated in the forwards and even the combined talents of Smith, Thurston, Cronk, Slater and DCE were powerless to do anything behind a beaten pack.

There is more to your 2014 spine theory feathered friend ....

For the first time and only time in 2014 the same nsw forwards dominated to over come the Deadly QLD spine and the winning results were marginal

That took only affect in one series and in only 2 close games

Game One nsw 12 qld 8

game two nsw 6 qld 4

*game three with the same nsw pack qld annihilate nsw 32 to 8 *

The moral of the story
Given both teams have equal packs the superior spine win will hold the game together and dominate most of the time

That's a fair summary Bozo, but truth be known - if you have a powerhouse dominant pack with an average spine against a powderpuff pack with superstar spine.....the average spine will outshine the Superstar spine.....100% facts my friend....

And if you have 2 equal packs the superior spine will shine and that is also 100%

When you have a better spine all your pack has to do is hold its own and your spine will make the game their own

Also When you build a team . You build it around a Great spine

That is the way I see it

Fair point also mate - but ALWAYS starts in that engine room.....don't even have to be flashy, even a tough and gutsy pack who can match up physically, is enough to set the platform.
