Having Jimi Hendrix as their support act on tour was not a great idea in retrospect...

Arguably the Monkees later stuff after they escaped their contract and put out a couple of great albums of their own music is really good. Also Mike Nesmith released awesome psychocountry albums in the early 70s.
Very true, and when the Monkees wanted to sing their own stuff, the producers refused, they wanted them to sings songs like "Sugar Sugar", so the Monkees folded and replaced by cartoon characters.
Rugby League in Melbourne is the same, it's a square peg in a round hole, it will never fit, no matter how much success they have, the NRL should concentrate on it's strengths, not it's weaknesses

I don't take much notice of Waleed Aly has to say most of the time but his (amongst many others) comments regarding the AFL GF being played at night really hit the nail on the head...

"There comes a point in sport where sometimes the right decision is not to chase the people who aren't interested and to service the people who really, really are."

It seems to be all the rage with sports administrators wanting to take over the world rather than just healthily existing in their own world. Soccer haven't felt the need to tweak things too much over the years and they still can have exciting 0-0 draws and dour 3-0 wins.

It's funny, I try to always watch the AFL GF but this year it just didn't seem like a GF to me, more like another Saturday night match.

I've said it before and will say it again.

Having a successful NRL team in Melbourne, the heart of the AFL, is good for business ... not to mention bragging rights. Hence why in now 23 years in the NRL, Melbourne have never had to do any more than the absolute bare minimum when it comes to juniors from their own state and will continue to have Qld as their junior base for a long time to come.

Seriously, even with buying a few imports, if the Storm had to rely on Melbourne / Victoria for their juniors then they would barely ever make it out of the bottom 4, and that is not good for business. But after 23 years you would think they would have had at least some pathways in place to bring on more local juniors than the what, 2, 3, 4 they have had?

Melbourne were set up by the NRL (because remember, they actually started in 1998 so technically weren't a Super League team even though they were owned by News) to be successful right from the start. Ever since South Melbourne uprooted at the end of the 1981 VFL Season and landed at the SCG to become the Sydney Swans from 1982, the league had been desperate to get a foothold in Melbourne. Why do you think that so many Tests and Origins have been taken there since 1990 while until the past couple of years other centres that also had a team at one point, Perth and Adelaide, got virtually ignored other than just a sometimes annual, once a year club game? Why do you think the league didn't give two hoots if the Mariners or Reds or Adelaide Rams folded? Because the goal was always Melbourne ... but they had to be successful and they knew they never would be having to rely on local juniors or discards. And to that end, their first squad wasn't just discards from other clubs thrown together. Oh no, they not only got the pick of bunch from the disbanded Western Reds and Hunter Mariners, they also basically got given the pick of off-contract SL players, including Glenn Lazarus. And its gone on from there with their Qld junior base over the years landing them the likes of Smith, Slater, 1nglis, Folau, Cronk and Munster.

Not one of the players who have legitimately won premierships for the Melbourne Storm was either born in Victoria or came through the local system. In fact, the closest any of their premiership winners was born to the Victorian border was Dale Finucane who was born in Bega.

They bleated about Jeremy Smith being born in Melbourne. But he was a baby then and didn’t play league.

Cut it adrift. Australia’s no.1 second line city (on the make). Just ahead of Brisbane and Perth.

Sorry mainland Hobart, aka Adelaide, you don’t make the cut.

Heaps of reasons and examples to dislike and be critical of the Storm in many facets since their presence in Melbourne but still important to look at the bigger picture and the positives for the code in having a Victorian based team . Queensland has the population and League interest to have at least four N R L based teams and no problem with some Brisbane based club sides and the Sunshine Coast also being virtually a feeder source for the Storm . Isn't the Storm membership currently in the 18 k range , Don"t seem to lack any general supporter interest there , regardless of where they may reside . Probably inevitable for a Perth based N R L team to emerge down the track also so a Victorian based and viable side really has just as much entitlement to have a continued presence in the N R L . Storm have had the wood on Manly during the past couple of seasons or so , despite a couple of great wins over then down there in 2018 , 19 . Just hope that Manly can again be a consistent performer at their level and a chance for the same success level .
