Interesting isn't it that our 'big' signings for 2023 -- Kelma and Condom -- didn't register a single point in the season. Good thing Doesn'tmatta recruiters didn't get to see this before signing Kelma (if this signing news is accurate).
I'm sure most posters are like me: when we win it's hard to restrict voting to just three players; there are many we want to give a wrap to. On the other hand, when we lose often we struggle to find three players worthy of commendation.
At the risk of doing an 'Albo' and suggesting a change: How about we consider making it Top Five Best after a win, but remaining at three players after a loss? Vote YES or Vote NO...

There's certainly a lot more votes to count after a win. I've been pretty strict with how I count the votes and think it gets too messy counting multiple or split votes. For what it's worth I only count votes that have a clearly defined 3 2 1, for a total of 6 points towards the final count. For example, a vote of DCE 3, everyone else 0 doesn't get counted. Likewise a vote of Ola 3, Garrick 2, Jake and Koula 1 each doesn't get counted as that voter has given 7 total points towards the final count where other voters are giving 6. I also don't count a vote of say 0.5 point each to split a 1 vote but that's purely a selfish thing as I couldn't be bothered keeping records down to that sort of detail.

What I do hope to get time to do at some stage is total up all votes received and see how that table pans out. Each game only has a 3 2 and 1 obviously but some weeks the player getting 3 points might have 120 total votes and the 2 points might get 30 (this happened a lot with Turbo in 2021). However the next week the top player might register 50 votes and 2nd place 49, but top player from both weeks gets 3 points towards the overall yearly total, if that makes sense. I think it'd be an interesting way to look at it. There's players who register votes every week but more often then not end up 4th or 5th in the voting so don't register many points towards the yearly tally.

The Top 10 in this year's list do look clearly like our current top 10 players.
Add Brooks, maybe Lodge later in the year, and our best 17 only has 5 spots left.
Of which we'd hope Gordie and Schu to take 2.
That leaves Saab plus ... one more outside back and one more bench forward.
Paulo/Tuipulotu/Parker and Aloai/Burbo...?

Great work @mosto, I'm sure it's a bit of work. So thanks very much for the effort.

I always have to watch the replay after watching at Brookie and it's amazing how much I miss and I usually surprise myself with the 3 I end up with.

Thanks again.

Thank you so much Mosto. Your diligent work is more appreciated than you could imagine.

Once again the wisdom of the crowd has proven its worth. This is exactly how I would've ordered the team this year with the possible exception of Froggy being underrated.
Yep, I would have thought Croker was easy top 5 but there you go.

Yes, thanks @mosto for compiling this.

As for the wisdom of the crowd, it's generally on the money but one thing I noticed more of this year was that the 1 point vote tended to be given as an "encouragement award" .... rather than the third best player.
Eg - How did Vaega get 2 points in RD 23 v the chooks?
He obviously got enough 1 point votes but if he was our second best player then 15 other guys had absolute shockers!

PS - I can't believe Reuben didn't get any points until Rd 15, I thought he was consistently one of best.

Agreed, as @mosto pointed out, total points maybe a better metric for overall contribution to the season as a whole.

Thank you @mosto for running the MVP again this year, your efforts are much appreciated. I really enjoy participating every week and it's interesting to compare votes with other posters.

Funny how Lodge got 3.5 points for a similar number of games, yet Aloiai couldn't even get 1 point this year! That says it all...

Maybe the best measure would be some sort of player rating system where we give a score out of 10 for each player. I wonder if it could be automated? @Dan is this possible?

Yes it's possible, yes it's something I want to build and I hope I have time after December to build it.

What would help is if someone could work out precisely what we need and the equations and then I can just throw the rest together
