Cross-Forum-Discussion Round 19 2023 Cross Forum Chat

Why did they scrap the Pacific/NZ tests in bye week, that weekend was a feast of league topped off by origin on Wednesday. Best format for one of the byes, make it a 3 round series in standalone bye weeks, was there not enough interest in that in Aussie?

It was more to do with the fact it hurt Origin views having it on the weekend compared to during the week.

Considering what the TV channels want is what they get, this happens.

What do our Wahs and Silvertails friends think of all the fuss being kicked up about Origin depleted games all of a sudden?

Very convenient that Eels and Rabbits lose one impacted game a piece and now suddenly parts of the media are pushing for change.
I've got some sympathy for the argument that having SOO games on Wednesday - given that no other sport other than rugby once having Australia playing France last July touches it with a barge pole - makes sense publicity wise. Personally, I'd rather it was 3 consecutive Wednesdays rather than how it is now, 2 week break than 3 week...blah blah. I'm sure there's logic behind how it is now, but I'd rather the 3 week block, personally.

It does lower the buzz of beating so-and-so because they've got Origin players even if, as the Warriors have, we've got first choice players out injured/suspended. I don't know why it feels lesser beating the Eels who had players out because of Origin that it would if those same players were out because of injury or suspension, but it does...

They were only played because they played Origin as a stand alone fixture on a Sunday with the entire comp having a bye.

They wanted to keep footy on TV for the normal timeslots do they added those tests to fill out the weekend

The game yesterday being decided by a penalty is a **** way for a game to be decided, but I hope it happens more often.

It's been an issue for years, in those stages of the game where teams are going for a field goal, especially in GP, the defending team are constantly offside. If teams are penalized more and more for it, they will start to learn they can't do it anymore. That would be a good thing.

no, simply removed field goals from deciding GP. Tries only to win, FG just adds points.

Am I imagining things when I remember that it was supposed to be extra time this year instead of golden point? I'm not a fan of GP, the other team should have a chance to respond.

Yeah its such a crap system then compounded with the 7 tackle set punishment.

FG for the pts and tries for the win would incentivise much better play, as well as taking milking penalties and the ref out of it.

Imagine last night, the Dolphins kick the 2 & Tits get to respond OR the Dolphins tap and run.

I don't really see this being all that successful. There will be too many draws, and defending teams will still be constantly offside. Refs will wave 6 again but really by the time they get in an attacking position, defending teams won't need to hold out long.

There have been 5 games this season decided by 1pt in GP time.

Not really, it will still be worth going for the field goal early on then you get the ball back and can go for the try or vice versa (go for the try early and if neither team gets a try nearing the end I'm sure both teams will attempt the field goal. Will make the golden point better to watch as well.

Teams will still likely just go for the field goal so not really much point changing it.
True that teams will still go for the field goal, but it wont necessarily be the winner as they'll still have to hold on for the 10mins of extra time.

I think you'd find that teams would be going for the try in the first 5mins of extra time to win it, but then look for a field goal in the second.
