Cross-Forum-Discussion Round 19 2023 Cross Forum Chat

Interesting listening to the South’s coach going off about them getting no joy in the rucks and being held down etc. when their average PTB speed was quicker than the dogs!

Looking forward to the Dolphins vs Titans game today.

It’s that time of the season where the loser in these games almost puts a line through their top 8 chances. A lot to play for!

Demetriou having a massive whinge in the presser.

he's gone full stupid.

a shoulder charge making contact with the head, accidental or not has been a sin bin for several years

Yeah, the jury is out on JD for me. I think he is a good coach and he has a track record of success but he has a narky edge to him when things don't go his way and he hasn't got it in him to let some stuff go through to the keeper.
I know the journos probe for a reaction but the good coaches just turn it into a dot ball and save their amo for when it counts.
I think it shows he is under pressure.

Haha so true.

Sorry didn’t see it clearly would have to watch the tape again.

And given ‘tapes’ haven’t been used since like the 90s, this is clearly a coaches response.

The same thought crossed my mind, but they seem fairly consistent on letting it go as long as the defence has enough time to adjust.
I find it frustrating and confusing because in general play running behind a player, no matter what, is a penalty unless you stop and concede or do voluntary tackle.
The rules are a growing cluster.😖
The latest being the NRL decision to back the bungler in the Fifita push on Fogarty. There was a similar ruling in the Tigers Sharks game and everyone just accepted the call so now it's changed because of a mistake they didn't want to own.
My take on it is if a player runs in front of another player while chasing then decides to slow down and or lean back he is a blocker, he is no longer contesting the ball, he's playing the man.
If the player gets his position before the chasers arrive and is standing there then that's fine, he was there first and is entitled to stand his ground without being shoved out the way.

I can picture some of the coaches still using them. Ricky springs to mind.

maybe JD's whinging has paid off. Milne didn't get charged for a shoulder charge.

he got charged with a Grade 1 Careless High Tackle. it is his 3rd such charge, but he still won't miss a game if he takes the early guilty plea. it will be a $3k fine

that was a bin everyday of the week - the idea that it was careless can only stem from it not being well executed ... i get the frustration coaches may have with the bunker and the citing system etc. but that's quite different from calling something harmless or unfortunate when it was neither of those things - it's like JD is countering stupid with more stupid

That's not his issue, it was a penalty and then when he didn't get up with a neck injury it became on report and sin bin.

JD is saying Milne didn't cause the neck injury and him being hurt changed the decision.

I have to agree with Demetriou tbh. Even though his whinging about the ruck is complete bull****. You could see that he hurt his neck in the guy that came over the top after the original hit. The bunker got spooked after they had already ruled. I dont think it was sin bin worthy. It was a catching motion.

My 2 cents on JD. He was right this match on the Bulldogs slowing the ruck considerably. It was very noticeable. The ref would call held, then the Dogs would still be wrestling and half a tic later the player would be brought to the ground, etc. Or they would be lying like a blanket on the player, or moving hands to the ball. It was pretty obvious ruck infringement strategy, and the ref let it go for whatever reason.
JD was also right about the farcical way the Sin Binning occurred. They should have got that correct immediately, not faffed around while the player was being stretchered off. It was a sin bin, and they eventually got it right, but it looks **** when it takes 3 looks and 4 minutes.
However, JD should STFU. He was whining last week about the refs and they won and were no angels in the match. Then he goes and has a cry this week in the post-match? Spare me. Sook it up in private and let the fans whinge. His team got stung early and should have been better.

It’ll come as no surprise that Corey Parker just came out saying he 100% agrees with JD.

Except they had a faster ptb speed as per the stats soooooo

I agree with JD too, but it's not a good look for him. Parker, for example, can do whatever he wants in his line of work. He isn't a coach, and he lost the job he had as one. Players whose coach makes excuses will also make excuses. The only time a coach should invoke the reffing is to tell the players they won't be getting any favours and it may as well be 14 v 13 out there and they have to be perfect.

I mean, it does also depend on how that stat is measured. For example, Payne Haas last year had very fast ptb stats, but it was because he was wrapped up, walked forward a few metres as the defensive line reset, then the ref called held, Payne bent over and played the ball. This is different to a player hitting the ground, getting laid on, standing and playing the ball. Maybe the Rabbits were just springing up fast after the tackle was deemed complete. Also, I'm not sure if this stat improved over the course of the match, because most of what I saw happened early on, as the Dogs were on top.
