DESSIE DITCHES DOGGY

Manly are on edge after being outed as the originators of rugby league wrestling. Coach Des Hasler last week banned The Daily Telegraph from doing a story on Norm Steel, the former Olympic wrestler who joined the Manly coaching staff way back in 1996.

This is seven years before Craig Bellamy even became a coach. Colleague Dean Ritchie tracked down Steel, who is now 72 and still at the club.

The idea was for Steel to put Bulldog in a headlock and show off some old wrestling manoeuvres for a lighthearted online video. Precious Dessie found out and told Norm not to do it.

Yeah just for a lighthearted online video from Bulldog Ritchie. Which wouldn't continue to point the finger at Manly starting the wrestling era.
Good advice Des. And glad to hear Norm is still with the club.

lol

Awesome!

Always in front of the curve. Helping drag league into the professional era. Well done Manly! You're welcome other teams.

Nice try Phil. What a total waste to humanity you have been. Still trying to get those invites to storm functions? Lol

It began in the mid 1980s with the Dogs and Eels. Hullooo? Tryless grand final Buzz??? The 1987 Manly team, copied by Canberra and Penrith, went on create a new era of entertaining footy!

The only dodgy tackling the Manly team in the mid 1990s did was one spear tackle from Jim Sedaris near the end of the final in 1997. He got suspended and Manly would've flogged the Knights with him on deck. ..

The propaganda in both the News Corp media over wrestling and in Russia is best understood through the prism of history. In the mid 1980’s, when the holy grail of the game was a tryless grand final, defence dominated. Ball carriers were worked over on the ground

I thought todays article must of got mixed up between the Tele and a Cronulla local rag, normally there is a heavy Cronulla bias but today it was way more than usual.

In the Matthew ridge documentary, Lowe has them wrestling at training, but it seemed more a team building and psychological exercise.

If only Roy had written that a cpl days earlier. He would’ve been Toddys plus one for sure. Masters would’ve come dressed as Stalin as well.

40+ years later, the town drunk still must have nightmares about 1973 and 1978 (seems Masters is also bitter about 1978).

He has literally death ridden and tried in print to derail Manly (especially when we have gone well, which is often) at every opportunity since.

He is going to die a bitter, pickled old man.

Will have to re-watch that but I more remember Tooves and (I think) OJ belting the crap out of Ridge with boxing gloves.

This is all journalism bull$hit, Rothfield came up with this "scoop" a week ago on NRL 360, and Controversy Corner,he questioned Tooves about it and Tooves shot him down in flames by saying that we did wrestling as purely a form of fitness and not to slow the play, he said "we didn't even think about slowing the play".
However Rothtool still thinks this story has legs and is running with it

Yeah all I remember from that vid was seeing Matthew getting the **** punched out of him for about one or two very long minutes...I think that was the "gain respect' session lol

Paul Kent also told BuzzCock that there was nothing to the story as well .... RothTurd is becoming the poster boy Donner-Kruger Syndrome ....

What a dick. He literally spoke directly to someone (Toovey) who lived it and he set him straight. Yet he writes this BS story anyway.
He should get a job at New Idea where he belongs
