true, they had first past the post for many years after those first few 'finals" then a period of right to challenge stuff.i reckon souths beat newtown in the first proper semi series with a gf but dont know when -late 40s early 50s ??

East beat glebe in the first grand final in 1911- then for the next 14 years it went to the minor premiers since glebe were minor premiers in 1911.

As for traditional grand final as we know it today without the right to challenge - that went to souths over newtown, newtown were minor premiers - 1954.

The first Grand Final was held on October 4th 1932 with Western Suburbs defeating St. George 27-2.

It all depends on what you call a grand final. That one in 1930 was still a right to challenge grand final - the same as the 1911 grand final - the exeption being that it has 2 semi finals, then a final in which the minor premiers lost, who then used the right to challenge in order to have the Grand final.

The first mandatory GF was 1954 won by Souths but CW did say it was not Souths he was looking for so it had to be the one in 1930

I have a book at home called the Grand Finals of the NSWRL. Great read but it lists the first official grand final as one other than all those mentioned. I will add more when I get home!

The first Mandatory Grand Final was won by South Sydney. They defeated Newtown 23 - 15 in 1954.

The First Premiership went to South Sydney aswell. Runners up were Easts.

Before mandatory GFs from 1954 if the minor premiers lost at any stage in the finals they could challenge the winners and this match was called the Grand Final.

The match I am referring to happened in the 30s and Souths were not the winners of this game.

You are talking about the 1930 match where west lost then challenged St George as minor premiers then won the "grand" final 27 - 2.

In 1911 Glebe lost the first match then challenged Easts for a "grand" final in exactly the same way, however easts were succesful both times on the back of Dally Messenger.
