RIP Rugby league week

Hopefully the Nrl dosn't make it a free for all with the Immortals. The only one I disagree with is Johns....he was a bloody drug addict when he was playing. The only current player that I think deserves to be there is Thurston. If they ever put Scam Smith in there I'll walk away from footy!
Oh yeah, just wait... a QLD free for all on the way

RLW was dead once it changed from being a newspaper that came out on Fridays with all the news from the week and match previews.

It became a magazine with too much emphasis on match reviews and silly snippets by Tony Adams' using stupid non de plumes.

The real death knell was giving the likes of Florimo, Kimmorely and Gasnier 10/10 ratings putting them along side Terry Randall. Think about this one a moment if you will.

Sign of he times I guess.

And I'm guessing that the start of the rot would've been when they started employing ' funky ' editors and not hard nosed league men like pinky Prenter and Headsy.
Anyway I have the first copy and I'll have the last and quite a few in between.
It's funny cause I only just started buying it again.

This magazine was once part of my life . As a 9 yo living in sydney i used to collect coke bottles in Order to earn the 25 cents for it each week. When we moved to adelaide in my teens i had a standing order at a local newsagent where it arrived on saturday. As i grew older and moved to brisbane weds mornings in the eighties and nineties were a highlight. Brekky with rlw and had to wait until i got home to read the rest. i couldnt wait. Loved it

Then tony durkin become editor, the publication went down hill. I tried for a while but pretty much only got it for plane trips or if home sick

Havnt read it now for well over a decade, probably 2 . While digital probably ended its life, durkin killed it for me.

Umm...

I've actually never read one...ever!

But before you send the village mob.... I've never seen E.T (the movie) either.

Ok, pitchforks and torches.

Used to buy Big League in the late 70s during my teenage obsession with the Sea Eagles. I recently rediscovered my Sea Eagles scrapbook from those days in a box in my garage. Still had lots of articles cut out from RLW. I have copies from 08 and 11 tucked away that celebrate our GF victory. Sad that it has gone but i haven't bought it for years. I used to buy about 6-8 magazines a fortnight in the early 80s. Big League, Auto Action and Racing Car News (for petrol heads), Rolling Stone, RAM and Juke for local and international music. Now i don't buy any. The internet has killed some of them, but I guess I have also grown older and have moved on a bit. Still sad that an iconic magazine should fold.

Given the recent history of the NRL the Immortals will just be one more tool for their marketing department to manipulate for advantage.

Get ready for Brad Arthur to be anointed within the month.

Or some suck up choice equally as ridiculous.
That'll be the final escape hatch from the game I've loved all my life.

Right....... I'm lighting and sharpening as I write.
I'll let you off the hook if you tell me you've seen......
Bull Durham !!
