A FORMER first grade NRL player who allegedly blackmailed a man by forcing him to withdraw thousands of dollars from ATMs has been granted bail.
Andrew Frew, who played nearly 50 first grade games for Manly and the Northern Eagles more than a decade ago, was arrested last Friday and charged with allegedly blackmailing a 58-year-old Lane Cove man.
Police told the Court Frew and another woman drove the man to ATMs between June 16 and last Friday, forcing him to withdraw thousands of dollars from ATMs.
The court heard Frew and his co-accused, 38-year-old Louise Temple, went to the man's house, where he lived with his elderly father, and demanded money.
Magistrate Clare Farnan granted Frew bail, on the condition he doesn't go to Lane Cove at all and reports to police three times a week.
She said the allegations were "very serious" but that the case "relies on the evidence of one person."
Frew played 86 games of first grade rugby league for six clubs.
His last match was for St George Illawarra in 2004.
The case returns to court on September 25.
