Refereeing

Snake's Alive!
There has been much said about the quality of the refereeing last night during the Origin...obviously it was great refereeing and the game was allowed to flow blah blah blah we hear it every year... But will someone for the life of me tell me WHY they can't apply the same leniency to club officiating?! If it makes for a better spectacle, then why not do it every week throughout the season? It has nothing to do with the quality of the game allowing for it because there were some really obvious things that were let go last night that would have been pulled up in the club games...

Well said and no I can't explain why.
The pace of the game, yes I know it was origin, was so intense even veterans struggled.
In club footy Pearce's try would've been pulled up and plenty would be on report for nothing incidents.
The first half featured very little or no mistakes and that was largely because continuity was maintained.
The refs also didn't listen too much to sCam and maintained authority.
Well done.

To some extent it must be the sheer pace and intensity of origin. Back in NRL land, you get whacked in the melon, you stay down...someone lies all over you, you flop around and play for a penalty. In origin, the mentality is to GET THE **** UP AND PLAY THE BALL FAST!! - no matter if you've just been decapitated, or had Cam Smith try to rip your arm off. So refs don't have to be so strict, maybe.

I wonder what they classify as "great" refereeing tho? Yes the game flowed, yay.... Except they seem to forget that a chicken wing that causes damage is a penalty-report.... Oldmates shoulder sending Pearce on a one way trip to disneyland is a penalty-report....
Sick of origin just letting sh$t go when 26 other rounds of the year its very heavily punished

It seems that the chicken wing tack is alive and well. I am gobsmacked that Boyd Cordner was not charged with that and now Nate is out for 3 weeks as a result of that tackle. I did chuckle about Scam Smith blowing up to the refs about it when he and his Melbourne drizzle colleagues have pioneered wrestling and grappling tactics which are a blight on the game we see today

Personally feel the SOO is simply played at a higher tempo for the 80 minutes.
The players cant keep up at times defensively and the gates close slower, allowing far more momentum, especially around the ruck and with inside balls as players poke their head through the line more often and win the quicker play ball.
The refereeing in SOO is always the same imo, no real changes - just WAAAAY more lenient in everything from high shots, late hits and illegal wrestling tactics.....there was no magic refereeing I found, just more blind eyes to things outlawed in the average NRL game.

After viewing all of @eagle66 's videos, the game on Wednesday night was as close as we've been to those 70's games for years. The majority like the free flowing attack, and less laying around in the ruck. If the referring on Wednesday was translated to a weekly norm, I think the game of Rugby League would grow greatly.

Interesting though, the game was a much better spectacle and if you noticed they reckon it was the worst QLD crowd for a SOO they have had, either they are too complacent thinking they would win, or the game is becoming boring. After this game I bet you there will be an extra 20 or 30,000 ticket sold in Sydney. If by some miracle we loose, then they will have a max crowd in for the 3rd. Reckon the message was sent down the line based on ticket sales.

Reality was that SOO is the toughest form of football. Big hits, big runs. Spoke to a few of the players since and they were all so excited having played in the game. None of them are upset about the hits or the tackles. Few mentioned though that Pearce's eyes looked like reels from a moving pokie.

I totally agree that the same flexibility should happen week to week, it would certainly see the fans return to weekend fixtures and create better atmospheres. The NRL needs to address a weakening spectacle against other codes.

Whilst I'm here, what do you reckon about a combined Islander team versus a Kiwi team as the warm up match before the SOO starts. That would bring an extra 20,000 through the gates?

I guess this is " Tin Foil Hat" stuff BUT I'm not at convinced there's not some sort of conspiracy happening in the NRL.

You only have to look at the winners the last 4-5 years and then look at that year to see there's " favourites " being played ( at times).

There's no doubt the NRL would love a Western Sydney Premier , especially with the rise in the AFL and the A League.

But basically the Panthers , Tigers and Parramatta have ****ed up big time last year and so far this year, so despite wanting it, they can only influence so much.

It's been quite some time since the Donkeys won one but of course did play in one only two years ago.

No doubt they have a fair side BUT they are getting every possible leg up ( watch one of their games and you'll see what I mean) so predicting it's " Dariusssss's" year this year and further glorifying Daddy Bennett.

Back on SOO, let's not forget that's NOT run by Greenslime , the ARL in
Cahoots with the QRL/NSWRL run that!

Could this be a reason the Reffing is different???

I dunno, but it smells fishy.

simply put if week in week out we had those head contacts (gillett and Fifita), grapples, chinken wings, fascials etc the soccer mum brigade would be out in force protesting and the game would die at the junior levels as no one would be allowed to play.

Agreed, but therein lies my point. Why can't they show WAAAAY more leniency during the preliminary rounds; regardless of the speed of the game. Just stop nitpicking on strips and ruck speed and high tackles that are clearly around the shoulders etc. etc. They pull up way too much in the week to week competition and it kills the spectacle.

SOO is only 3 games run by part time coaches who dont have the time to exploit the slack reffing. Coaches like Martina Benny and De$ would make an even bigger mockery than they already do of the rules.

There is copious amounts of inconsistent refereeing, administration, etc in the NRL week to week, without even needing to use SOO as an example of it.

NRL need to seriously look at this issue.

If die-hards like me are turning off because of it, and the increasingly boring nature if the game, then something needs to change

I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist but when we played the Titans and we got out to a good lead, it certainly seemed like the Titans started getting the benefit of the doubt with the referees...the amount of times they got piggy backed up the field in the first 20 minutes of that second half was (how should I say this...) interesting?!

One does have to wonder...
