Recruitment & Retention ...

I love how 20s have reverted to flegg.

I remember siting at a mates place after round 1 2003 and bench prop Danny Lima was there and all the talk was about this fullback in SG ball that was freak.

Well that freak ended up making his first grade debut against parramatta that same year and the rest was history.

I’m excited to see what this young group of Tongan school mates can do over the next few years, I hope we keep them all together. Paseka, Suli, Funa and Fainu... some crazy potential right there.
If they make it to the big time I hope they stay loyal and play for Tonga and not choose nsw

The focus away from the U20s does make it a little easier to retain talent if you are prepared to...The salary cap for the Flegg is way less than the past and if a club wants to pick a young player from you,the main way financially to do it is to offer them a $60k maximum contract on their 6 man development squad(eg Hopoate/Schuster) but if we value them just as highly,we can match that offer and put them on our own development squad(although it depends if you want to offer a 16/17 year old that much cash). If a club is highly desperate they can offer them a spot on their 30 man squad and a $100k contract, but the risk is having to use them if there are injuries...For us we can potentially look to offer Fainu/Olakau'atu/Cust/Metcalfe spots in the 30 man squad for 2019 and if Schuster/Hopoate are attracting interest then we can look to place them on a $60k development contract (for 2019)and anyone wanting to poach them would have to offer them a spot at 17 years of age in their 30 man squad to trump us.Of course if we don't value a player as much as another club does then obviously they will sign and go...
The new CBA actually protects us further as a player cannot sign a top 30 or Development contract until they are 18. So we should, if carefully managed keep the majority of the outstanding juniors we have and be competitive with anything else put down.

he good thing is with this current stock of talent - only really need the odd Marquee player and concentrate on nurturing whats in the backyard and there is another window of success in the coming years, so should hold onto most of them.
A strong 2018 campaign will add to Barrett's allure and confirm Manly is a team on the rise, and this will count for heaps when it comes to retention & recruitment.

There is also the $200k veteran/development player option which can help to retain an elite junior if you don't want to spend it on an 8 year vet.If a guy is under 22 and has not been on an NRL contract before, you can pay a development squad guy a further $200k for a season if you wish.It might sound crazy, but if you truly believe young Hopoate or Schuster are the bees knees and are 18,you could pay one of them $260k for a season to fend off the ARU or the Roosters if they were swooping and it is a figure that the Roosters could not match unless they want to put the guy on their 30 man squad to try to match our offer($260k).They have to have been with the club for at least 2 years and you can do it for only one player each year(can be the same player up to the age of 22 as long as they are not put in your 30 man squad any year.)
