Ray Warren extends contract. 5 years.

There's no need to search for a replacement for Ray Warren because the golden voice of rugby league has extended his contract with Channel Nine for another five years. 😕

He will be with the Nine Network until the end of 2022, but that doesn’t mean he will still be calling NRL matches for that long.

Warren will provide his inimitable voice for promos and production, and contribute content across WWOS mobile platforms including columns and podcasts.

Warren said that while his long-term future as NRL caller was yet to the decided, he is thrilled to remain with the Nine Network.

Nine revealed the contract was thrashed out over a sausage sandwich during the week and Warren said he is thrilled to continue his long standing association with the rugby league broadcaster.

But while the five-year deal keeps Warren at Nine, there’s no guarantee he will see out the deal as strictly a commentator.

At this stage I've got a conspiracy theory that Channel 9 have bought a massive amount shares in Foxtel and are trying to drive all the FTA fans to the pay TV service.

The 9 commentators are just terrible, Gould, Warren, Hadley and the worst of the bunch, the mouth breathing cliche'd hack Thompson are virtually unbearable, the only thing that's right is the price!!!

I don't know why but I've always thought Rabs was the best commentator of them all, he makes the games feel dramatic and special. However, I do agree that he is past it now although just don't get why everyone doesn't like him. Hate Gould and all that although they have football voices, and when watching the matches I like listening to em. Vossy is level as my favourite, but the rest on fox, although I like them all (bar Blocker), I reckon they sound too similar and don't have the gravel in their voices that Rabs has or the entertainment Vossy brings.

I can't stand listening to him waffle these days, he misses half the game rambling about horse racing, or some random person he's sending a cheerio to, who's sick in hospital and we need to know every gory detail while the game he's supposed to be commentating just carries on as background noise while he babbles.

And, as @globaleagle said, he often fails to identify the correct player, on the rare occasion he is actually calling the game instead of talking crap - or he'll be asking other commentators what just happened, or why a penalty was given, for five minutes after...while we're screaming at the TV that it was a strip/high tackle/whatever, ya senile old coot!

He's totally lost his marbles in recent years, and it's incredibly frustrating to listen to.

I don't notice these things to the extent some people obviously do although I can agree with that, he does tend to talk about something he can't understand for quite a while. Although he just makes the highlights in a match 10 times better for m, he has fallen off the pace in recent years though so I can't expect him to go on commentating for much longer.

But other than that you find him quite alright??
