Reserve Grader
Mathematically we are still alive, but in reality, we all know our season is as good as over after Sunday's gutsy but unfortunate loss.

Everyone knows teams have always lived or died by the quality of their spines, and these days killer wingers are almost as important.

These are the decisions Des must face...

Fullback:
Now that Tom and Elliot are both out, please Des do NOT pick Garrick as fullback. Some wingers can play no. 1, others definitely need to stay on the wing. Please give Albert Hopoate or Luke Metcalf a go who are genuine fullbacks. Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

Wing:
We all know it, and finally Des you know it too, Taufua's time is done. One big running hit every month just doesn't cut it while letting in a litany of tries down the left wing every single match. Penrith made an absolute fool of our left edge and every other team is aware of it too. Given we've no Ado-Carr's on the roster (see below) Funa must be given Jorge's jersey. Sad but it happens, just like when Brad Arthur had the balls to tell Tim Mannah his time was up.

5/8:
Once again, there are players who's careers are in the process of moving on, or have already moved on. Walker may not yet be in the latter, category, but he's definitely heading that way. Harsh? Well if a 5/8 doesn't have a kicking game, or much of a passing game, and on top of that has lost his speed, what does that leave? The answer is Cust, who must own the no.6 jersey.

Half:
DCE is obviously trying his guts out, and he's a proven match winner, but: 1. Please can we stop the endless slow sideways runs before slow motion handing the ball back inside. It's so predictable; 2. Please way less predictable 5th tackle bombs that do nothing, if DCE/team are too far out to attack a bomb, the kick has to be more dangerous either across field, or a searching grubber; 3. Please get DCE to run the ball more in a straight direction, his ability to break the line is massively underused

Hooker:
Levi tries hard, but he's no Fainu who would have killed it with set re starts. Croker is not a bad 3rd choice 5/8 when needed and tries hard too, but he's simply not a hooker. In lieu of Fainu being released to play again, is there anyone else? Who would have been reserve grade hooker if they'd played this year?

And while we're here...

Bench:
Paseka and Keppie are finally showing their size can make a huge impact, and hopefully Olakau-atu will be the same. They are must haves.
Sipley. Where is he? Why isn't he being considered? Have I missed something? He looked great before injured last year.
Schuster? Any other names?

Next season releases:
1. Taufua - see above - plus we need the cash
2. Walker - ditto Jorge - sometimes you just have to make tough calls
3. Boyle - not a first grader, now or ever, sorry

Next season must buys:
1. Star wingers x 2: Look at the top teams, Tupou/Morris/Ikavalu; Vunivalu/Ado-Carr; Sivo/Ferguson; Mansour/Naden; Cotric/Rapana. Then look at Taufua/Waddell. We need to spend big on the position that wreaks havoc, and scores way more tries than any other. Can someone do a trip to Fiji?
2. Hooker: If Fainu is back, no problem. But if he's gone we've got to find a replacement with pace. Not easy obviously.
3. Back row: Someone has to replace Thompson, and it's not Waddell or Gosiewski, we need a decent buy. Proctor woudn't be a bad option.

The big point - Des hope you are reading this - there's no point sticking with the old when the season is sliding past - teams like Penrith give rookies like Staines a big shot - and look at the results.

Good points however with the must-buys, I don't think we have the money associated in getting two star wingers.

Given his goal kicking and pace, Garrick will be on one wing next season so we only really need the one star winger, however if we re-sign Hoppa, he'll be the other winger. Out of all the wingers available for next season to buy, Johnston makes the most sense price-wise however we don't want to be in a bidding war and end up paying too much.

For the 2nd row, Olakau'atu looks to be the go-to to take over Thommo's spot. I still think we should keep either Waddell or Gosiewski (not both) as they do provide coverage in the centres similar to what Thommo has done in the past.

If Fainu gets off his charge, then we have a decent starting side for next season, it's more the depth that's the issue.

Hooker is the key. We will find out on Friday when Fainu's trial is listed. I fear we will be hamstrung (sorry Tom) for another entire season if he loses, because by then there will be no decent hookers left on the market. So he has to win his trial, it is the only hope we have!

Fainu back, Tom back, Dylan to centre and a large fast winger and we are golden.

1 Tom
2 Funa
3 Suli
4 Dylan
5 LFW
6 Cust
7 DCE
8 AFB
9 Fainu
10 AFB
11 Siro
12 Haumole
13 Jake

14 Levi
15 Waddell
16 Paseka
17 Keppie

I think this team is great and can compete at the pointy end. I also think this was Des' intended team this year (excluding Walker/Cust and of course the LFW).

good team but need to find a spot for schuster

I still think Cust's best position is #14
So if be chasing hard a 5/8 and a strike winger. With Fainu hopefully back, Turbo injury free and the unearthing of Hoppa, Schuster and Metcalfe all of a sudden we look like world beaters again.
Olakau-atu is my obvious replacement for Thommo

Good points but I feel an essential to get into the equation is Schuster. We must see if this kid is the super star he seems to have promised in the juniors. If he is, I'd have him at 5/8 and use Cust as the bench backup for Fainu. Maybe give Schuster a bench spot at first to see how he fares. But like with young Hopa, he could be one of Manly's key figures in years to come and we must see how he goes in the top grade. For me, forget the finals. Let Turbo and Walker heal over the off season. With a lot of luck and top class play we might just squeeze in, but I cant see it. Too many injuries, too few game breakers, a bridge too far. Time to experiment. Give the young players a bit of experience for the 2021 season. Manly needs to be preparing now for next season...and the seasons to follow.

Some great points. But you are dreaming with star buys. Who is the last superstar Manly poached from another club or Super League?

Seriously, how many test or origin stars have willingly come to Manly since our last GF win?

Taupau?

How many Australian test players?

AFB's going to be tired. Hope he gets a cut of Martys wage.

Good points, and more importantly...most are accurate.
We are in an ideal position to address our sideways movement, keep Dylan as a running potent centre and give us much needed last tackle options and first class foils for Cherry.
Sign K. Foran
Forget the past and take a punt on a 2 year deal. Manage his game time and use him when he is most needed 50-60 minutes a game
He will come if Des and Manly reach out.
The bad blood of 2014/15 will be put to rest, and it gives Fox & Cherry a chance to deliver what they should have a couple of times already.
I know I will get flamed by some because of his injuries and Judas past, but he is still a bloody good footballer when he is on the park.
His value around training would be worth it alone NO BACKS COACH required!
The planets may just be aligning ;)

Agree. And there's also a very big difference between someone with the talent of Fainu and a "decent hooker". We lost Api to keep him, which seemed like the smart bet, but we probably should have thought about a backup long before this season went off the rails.

Des's winning Manly teams always made use of two hookers, so it's weird that we were banking on converting either Crocker or Cust into a backup hooker. Doubly weird in Cade's case not to recognise that he's a natural half.

Agree with all of the excellent points. I also like Miski - he got a run or two last year and looked pretty solid, maybe he's not tall enough.....Des surely cannot keep picking slow ball dropping Jorge. Every side we play gets the team sheets each week and their game plan: attack Jorge's wing, there's loads of points there.

Is Des actually watching the games or is he at home just moving his players pieces about on a board game, having lost his junior players pieces somewhere behind the lounge?;)

Regarding penrith there will be an odd winger out.. staines, naden or to'o. I definitely think we should make a play for one of them. And I dunno know what it is but I have a feeling saab will be at manly next year. The whole situation has gone quiet and smells of manly... we always keep our signings under the rug til the hierarchy see fit to release the news. I would release taufua, waddell, gosiewski, croker for starters.. Thommo and elliot obviously. Haumole into the starting backrow vacancy see how he goes with the jumper for a full year before thinking about a quality backrow signing, siro will also be off contract end of that year. I would let parker and maybe just maybe let walker, taupau and garrick go the following year as well whilst holding on to hoppa, funa, schuster with 2 quality signings. For eg 2022 could look like this and still have money left over. I can't see schuster as our 6 moving forward.. DCE needs a controlling partner.
