Ponga

As I said at the moment he's allowed free rein because no one has yet worked out how to stop him. A year down the track, a few injuries and then we'll know if he is the very best. We all forget Phil Blake who was unstoppable in his first year, some spectacular tries, scoring 27 tries in 23 games, many individual efforts. But they got to him and his career at Manly went down hill from there. He remained a very clever footballer but nothing like 1983. Then there's Johnny Gibbs, who was probably the cleverest player of his age even better than Steve Mortimer. But they got to him and injuries ended what could have been a standout career. Looking good in the first year has been done many times before, and many have been called the next big thing... and then the slump. That's what is happening to Tom T. We forget how explosive he was when he first came to first grade and on everyones lips. Injury and coaches working out the plays has slowed him. He'll come back better but calling Ponga a champion at this stage is way too premature..

Just watching young Kayln on a replay of 100% footy and what an impressive young bloke.
All he has to do is stay healthy, and behave himself for 10 years and the world is his for the rest of his life.
I hope he does and hearing him speak I think he will.
He is a special one this bloke.

Can’t remember the last rookie to make such an impact. Maybe Karmichael hunt, he burst on the scene in a similar manner. RTS was another but he didn’t have the passing game ponga does.

He’s got a freakish skill set and when you think he is still developing physically then he could be anything with another 5-8 kg on him and a bit more power.

recently i read a story on this kid & in it he mentioned that he lives with his family and his family are with him in newcastle, they love it here but didn't enjoy north qld. he put the happiness of not just himself but also his family into consideration when deciding who to sign with so it would've been pretty hard for the cowboys to make their offer more attractive than newcastle's without going overboard.

He’s a talent , but let’s see how he goes in year two or after a few injuries ( which will happen).
Fair call.
Every time I see people saying 'give youth a go, they'll rise to the challenge' I'm reminded how many junior stars never take the step up to NRL
Here's a classic example:

7) Beau Henry

Nine times out of ten, Beau Henry would have been a superstar but he’s continually been struck by the kind of bad luck that’s normally associated with breaking mirrors. The 2009 Player of the Year and an absolute phenom at five-eighth, Henry had the total package — he was big, fast, powerful and had great touch. If ever a kid making it was a certainty, it was Henry. He scored 17 tries, created countless more and led Saints all the way to the preliminary final. The Warilla Gorillas junior was offered a place in the top squad by the Cowboys but was convinced by Wayne Bennett to stay with the Dragons but in the middle 2010 told him he was free to leave.

Beau Henry was the ultimate “can’t miss kid”

He had a dream start at the Knights, making his first grade debut in Round 1 of 2011 and scored a try in a big win over the Panthers. He crossed again in a win over North Queensland a week later but missed the next eight weeks through injury. During his lay-off, Bennett agreed to join the Knights in 2012 and rather than wait for Bennett to punt him again, Henry joined the Titans on a mid-season transfer. His time on the Gold Coast was a constant frustration — injuries saw him miss all of 2012 and in 2013-14 he managed just four NRL games. With his NRL prospects all but undone by a knee injury sustained in the middle of last season, he went back to the Dragons for one last shot but barely weeks into the season he shifted again, this time to Parramatta where he bounces between the NSW Cup and Ron Massey Cup for Wentworthville.

The Cowboys wanted to keep Thurston and Coote, as well as upgrade Morgan. They couldn't compete with the dollars. His dad is also his agent, and he made it clear at the time it was all about money. Unfortunately, that's always the way with modern footballers. Newcastle may be a great place to live (and personally I really like Newcastle), but the whole "doing it for my family" line got old years ago.
And is Ponga really a rookie? Don't forget he debuted in 2016 and played a number of games through 2017 for the Cows.

Ponga is a talent and is great to watch. I do think that Tom has the more destructive running game though. He breaks through tackles and tends to run a lot more than Ponga. But Ponga's greatest asset is his speed and that could be lost in one injury (a la Snake). Let's see how he goes after a year in first grade and how he handles injuries. Tom is still able to dominate games today after injuries and in his third year of first grade.

HE’S taking the hype surrounding his performances in the stride of his now trademark footwork.

Kalyn Ponga is the name on every rugby league fan’s lips who credits playing touch football for a sidestep that is straight out of the Benji Marshall and Shaun Johnson playbooks.

“That touch footy background, especially now, I can really tell that’s had a big part in the way I play,” Ponga said.

“I always run to the line and have three options. That’s a touch footy move.

“Especially when I do that move, it’s crazy how much that resembles touch and that’s probably why I think it’s given me the ability to do that.”

The Newcastle Knights picked up the unassuming 20-year-old for a pretty penny but he’s been worth every cent, leading the league in tackle breaks (68) and line-break assists (11) this season.

Ponga has also left a trail of sporting achievements behind him.

He won the under-13 national golf championship in New Zealand when he lived in his father’s homeland between the ages of eight and 13.

He excelled at soccer and touch football, played Schoolboys rugby league and attracted interest from the AFL and rugby when it came time to sign a contract.

Having his family by his side has helped, too.

When they returned to Australia in 2011, the Pongas settled in Queensland before moving to Townsville, when he joined the Cowboys.

When the Knights’ came knocking late in 2016, the timing couldn’t have been better.

His family was ready for a move and they now all live together in Newcastle.

It seems a happy Ponga off the field makes for the best Ponga on it.

“They’ve always come where I’ve had my opportunity,” Ponga said.

“Now I’m at that age where I’ll move out eventually but to have them here has played a big part in my footy.

“Not just in keeping me here, but why I’m enjoying it so much. The boys help. The place itself, it has a good vibe about it. I love it, it’s beautiful.

“But they were ready for a move too, just to get out of Townsville, they didn’t really enjoy it there. So they’ve moved here and they love it.”

Everyone will be waiting for more Ponga magic on Friday when Newcastle host Penrith.

It’s another week for him to impress as talk continues about a possible Queensland Origin call-up.

But Ponga sees it as another opportunity to perform for the Knights and grow as a player in the absence of injured playmaker Mitchell Pearce.

It’s the same positive outlook he applied when South Sydney superstar Greg Inglis steamrolled him last Friday.

“When GI ran straight over me, I was actually a little bit in awe,’’ Ponga said.

“I didn’t actually care that he ran over me. He’s done it to many people.”

Then there was the time he was in awe of Marshall when the Knights played the Tigers.

“I remember there was one point when I — I probably shouldn’t have — I kinda stared and watched him a little bit because I just wanted to watch him,’’ he said.

“Little things like that, I still enjoy seeing them play and do their thing.”

They are probably saying the same thing about Ponga.

He was a gun golfer and he chose RL ?? Make it at golf and your earnings will dwarf an nrl contract. Plus you can play till you’re 50.
