I'm wondering if the surfers in Newcastle are going to be dodging a rusting hulk over the next few summers.

Well... they never got the Sygna entirely away... it was the ship that ran aground in the late 70s on Stockton Beach (on the other side of Newcastle Harbour).

They tried to blow the sand out from underneath it with explosives. Instead, they essentially blew apart the ship and so they towed away one half and the other half is still there today.

Knowing the Sygna, I'd say the surf wasn't really affected (it's a big beach) but the ship now provides great fishing, especially if you're after sharks... hence, if the ship stays, the ship itself is the last thing the surfers have to worry about!
