Journey Man
After giving myself a week off, the ratings are back.
Tom Trbojevic 8/10 - One of our best on Sunday. May not have run for his usual amount of metres, but more than made up for it with solid defence, safe under kicks and his involvement in attack.
Jorge Taufua 6/10 - As usual his runs were good and his defence was OK, especially that last tackle on Rapana that jolted the ball loose for Elliot to dive on for the win. But he was never going to catch that bomb. Luckily it didn't hurt us.
Brendon Elliot 6/10 - Didn't do anything spectacular, but didn't put a foot wrong either and a couple of times, including the last play of the game, was in the right place at the right time.
Moses Suli 4/10 - Went OK while on, but missed most of the game after going off with an ankle injury.
Reuben Garrick 7/10 - His goal kicking was exemplary and he showed his speed when he backed up Jetski's intercept to race 60 metres to score (he burned Cotric big time). Some of his runs were strong too. He's not getting rag dolled as much in tackles anymore. Leilua should have been binned for dropping his knees into him after he scored.
Dylan Walker 7/10 - Walks had a good game in Canberra. His passing game at 5/8 has definitely improved from previous years. Robbed of a try with an obstruction call.
Daly Cherry-Evans 8/10 - Two try saving tackles, especially in the last minute against Whitehead, showed his worth as a defender. And once again his kicking game got Manly out of trouble a few times.
Addin Fonua-Blake 9/10 - AFB was a beast against the Green Machine in white. Forced to play a lot more minutes than normal thanks to the injuries, and he stood up to be counted.
Api Koroisau 6/10 - Our attack doesn't seem to click as much with Api at dummy half. Can't fault his tenacity in defence though.
Martin Taupau 7/10 - Like AFB, another strong effort from Mr Kapow.
Joel Thompson 4/10 - Started solidly but cruelly broke his arm in a tackle. He will be missed out there.
Jack Gosiewski 8/10 - Probably Jetski's best game as a starter. Solid defence, didn't shirk the hit ups and his intercept that led to Garrick's 8 point try was crucial to turning the game in Manly's favour.
Jake Trbojevic 8/10 - What can you say? Again he didn't make a lot of metres compared to our other forwards, but was often at first receiver as a passer so that's becoming to be expected. Defence was its usual solid self and bagged himself a crucial try next to the posts.
Manase Fainu 6/10 - Only made 3 runs at GIO, but all were quality. Some good defence also from the kid who until the U/20's couldn't tackle.
Corey Waddell 7/10 - Called in to replace Thommo late in the first half and we didn't lose anything with Corey out there.
Morgan Boyle 6/10 - Not a bad game from Morgan. Not great, but not bad. Copped a head knock that our trainer used to advantage and was a bit unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and got binned for his trouble, but he really had no choice but to tackle Rapana. In a way though it was a good decision by Boyle to take him because Rapana was off to the races against a retreating defence more expecting a quick kick rather than a quick tap.
Taniela Paseka 7/10 - This boy is starting to realise his potential. I thought he played well yesterday. When he fully matures.....I hope he's still a Sea Eagle because he is going to be huge in our pack.
It was a good win yesterday in the face of adversity. Not only were we up against an in form Raiders outfit in their own backyard, but we had to combat the whistle happy Ashley Klein.
But at what price was the win? Moses Suli will miss a week or maybe two with a sprained ankle, while Thommo's broken arm will see him out for almost the rest of the season....unless we make it to the Grand Final. The only saving grace there is the likely return of both Brad Parker and Curtis Sironen.
But you know something? The Manly of 2019 seem to thrive on adversity. We came back to beat Souffs after losing Turbo to a hamstring injury. We beat Canberra after losing DCE, and yesterday we beat them again after losing Suli and Thommo. Last year we'd have turned up our toes and died.....not this year though.
Now we face the Scum at home. We beat them before.....we can beat them again. But please, our blood pressure can't take many more of these close games. Lets wipe that smile off of sCam Smith's face and subject him to say.....a 40-0 win (remember, he didn't play in the last one). Please.
