Play the ball

Has there been changes to the rules or have the refs just given up?

I have seen a gutload of play the balls where they have not "made a genuine attempt" to play the football with their foot but yet to see a penalty for this post-COVID (Cant remember what happened in the first 2 rounds coz it was too long ago!)

Also... I have seen about 4 or 5 east-west play the balls where the player was not facing the opponents tryline but again I am yet to see a post-COVID penalty for this either...

Could someone enlighten me as to wtf is going on?

To me it seems like there’s a concerted effort to let things go unless it’s really stupid (like Carrigan last night).
With one ref it’s like if things get missed it’s kind of okay in the new world order.

The obvious tactic of conceding 6 again on tackle 1 or 2 all designed to slow things down. The play the ball is a farce at the moment, players not playing the ball correctly. The ten metres is the biggest concern for me, tonights game at Whinger part was marred by both teams getting away with that.

So round 1 was a sh*tshow with penalties ruining contests yet here we are just 2 rounds later and non-genuine attempts are now being ignored…

Have the NRL simply given up again or is this going to raise its head again at a crucial time like finals?

Jake and Burbo were both clearly guilty of non-genuine attempts in our game and there were many other examples across the weekend’s games…

Good Morning feathered friend
I see that teams lack of discipline is the cause of their own downfall .
The refs set the tempo in the game and the teams that do no adjust
Do not Justify their Whinging

Can anyone tell me what happened to the knock-back rule?
It disappeared about 10 years ago, and now 95% of the time a player touches or mishandles the ball it is ruled a knock-on.
I dunno about that one @The Who - personally I think they are starting to interpret knock backs more liberally the last season or two… there were at least a couple in our game yesterday that might have been called as knock-ons not so long ago…

I am sure I saw last week, we got pinged for a bad play the ball out of the blue against the Warriors.
The next set of six and rest of match had lots of similar play the balls, yet no penalty.

Refs are having a big influence on results at the moment.

Waddell also did one inside Canberra’s 20m in clear sight of the ref that had me worried we were going to be pinged for it but luckily he got away with it.

This PTB crack-down has a “thought bubble” smell about it… “genuine attempt” is way too subjective…

Either the player has to TOUCH the ball with his foot or he does not… anything else calls for an opinion by the ref - which is a recipe for disaster…

Yep it's the classic 2-3 week clampdown. Start rolling them between the legs again boys, they've given up.

The one that does my head in is how many teams ( Storm most notably ) just use the zero or 1st tackle as an opportunity to just smother the ruck like a chicken hatching an egg on the nest and almost looking around waiting for the referee to signal 6 again before they even consider rolling off the tackled player. Then the commentator calls it " another set of 6 " when we all know its 1 extra tackle only. Wish we would cotton on, we give our set restarts away in the middle of sets or later.

Stepping of the mark and over the top of tacklers to play the ball should be penalised. Stopping the play making them go back Doesn’t work.

Or you can just let it go - as happened with Arthur’s in the Broncs game - he stepped sideways to play the ball and left 2 markers out of play which led to a 40m break down field and a try 2 plays later…

Agree, is a genuine attempt moving your foot in a play the ball motion well above the ball or just near the ball?
Another problem is they can make a genuine attempt and actually touch it with their foot but if it's a bit clumsy and despite it going backwards they call it a knock on.....which is more of a genuine attempt to play the ball than pretending to.
