He played the ball without being tackled. It shouldn't be a penalty but it is.

s'funny how passing the ball after being called held ins't a penalty anymore, but playing the ball when not tackled still is.

I may have missed something (not unusual) but it seems the ref's just decided to use their discretion in the passing after held rule. I don't mind that too much but it does make the weirdness of other rules stand out.

Why is it? Surely it's up to the ball carrier to do whatever he wants. If he chooses to stop, play-the-ball then is it any different to passing tha ball to a teammate?
Stupid? Yes, but it's play on, isn't it?

If you pass the ball after the ref calls held it does nothing but halt your momentum because you have to come back and play it. You've effectively penalised yourself.

If you play the ball without being held it's not like he can tell you to come back and play it and you've gained an advantage by having no markers in place.
