Easiest way to solve it IMO is to make it discretionary.

This year is a perfect example of why referees SHOULD NOT have discretionary powers and it is destroying the game.

Discretionary means inconsistency and inconsistency is causing most of the referee-influenced game outcomes

They need to take the focus away from the ruck. This is not touch footy. For the last decade or more the team who wins the ruck usually wins the game. The game has become 1 dimensional and boring as a result.

Just let players lie on the tackles player longer, particularly those who made tackles around the legs. Then you won’t have layers lying in and around the ruck to throw he ball at and - even better - there will be no need for the wrestle which is destroying the game and the bodies of many players along with it.

I don't.know, not in my pay grade.
Maybe reduce the amount of penalisable offences and make the referees responsible for their decisions. A ref can find MANY niggly penalties on every set if they CHOOSE to, take most away and make them accountable. Make it MORE black and white and easier for refs, players and supporters to police, adhere to and understand.The more complex it is, the worse it is.

As mentioned in the other games thread, the act of the dummy half deliberately throwing the ball into a defending player has reached comical proportions.

I started a new thread as we know 'sports journos' troll sites and I wanted them to see that it's such a bad look that they should take notice.

If the refs are trying to convince us that they get most decisions correct (as todd keeps reminding us) then the bronco player throwing the ball into a roosters player on his knees but well out of the ruck was a joke.

It got worse. The parra player bouncing the ball into a warriors player, lying prone on the ground was just absolutely ridiculous.

Soon dummy halves are going to get the ball and run wildly after a retreating forward and lob the ball at him and the ref will have to award a penalty.

The fact that ref's were happy with those two instances as penalties is not only an embarrassment but it will have serial envelope pushes, Bellamy and Arthur working hard to exploit this joke to the fullest extent.

Terrible to watch, just embarrassing.

As a fan it sucks,! but worse still is the way it portrays the game to the rest of the world.

I've heard Green behind the ears say on countless occasions, "we are growing and portraying this great game in numerous ways to the world".....hello !!

Well wet behind the ears do something !!! If ever there was a case for bringing the game into disrepute ?, this is it.

Personally, I think it’s another rule on the run approach. If they think it is intentional then make them play it again. It kills the defence’s momentum, gives the defending team a bit of a rest and the attacking team will stop doing it as there is no advantage.

If the defending player is genuinely in the way and obstructs the dummy half then penalise, but don’t penalise a player for passing the ball into the opposition as it will become another drama where players are trying to extract a penalty. An incorrect penalty from the ref has greater consequences than if they were told to just play it again.

Couldn't agree more.
The ruck is too fast now. SuperLeague got its wish there. 5 dummy half runs with a bomb on the last....yay !!! And to be honest the 5 dummy half runs are mainly trying for an offside penalty these days as well as the metres.

Reward legs tackles and give defenders a chance to get to marker. And slow it all down a little.

Reduce the interchange further if they want to tire the big boys out to compensate for a slower ruck.

Watching some old games 'the other day' and the tackled players (except Mick Hancock) seem to go "ok, tackled. stop trying to creep forward" but now days it seems as if the tackled player will not stop...puts everything into getting that extra 1cm. Ref's don't call held if there is forward momentum and they let a lot of players (eg Inglis) steal metre after metre - it's no wonder 4 players all pile on.

Not saying you're wrong, I just don't know the correct and most efficient fix.

Players should be able to struggle in a tackle until it’s completed to gian as much post contact ground as they can, but once they are tackled that’s it, play the ball ON THE MARK. If not, PENALTY like it used to be. (You are right calling out Inglis by the way, he is the worst at stepping off the mark)

A lot of the struggle after being tackled is to milk a penalty for holding down, so if you relax that rule I believe a lot of that would go away too.

That rule should have been, and would have been invoked if either Ref had the common sense that God gave artichokes ...

This is probably the only time I'll support Greenturd as players should be penalised for milking.
What irks me is that he can make such a quick unilateral decision on this rather obtuse rule and yet the major rules that need to be changed - such as returning to one referee, reducing the impact of penalties and introducing a five-minute sin bin - are still in places, years after the need for change.
Having two referees has totally changed for the worse this game we love.
Greenturd, do us all a favour. Sack yourself, unilaterally!
