Pathetic penalties prove problems.

As mentioned in the other games thread, the act of the dummy half deliberately throwing the ball into a defending player has reached comical proportions.

I started a new thread as we know 'sports journos' troll sites and I wanted them to see that it's such a bad look that they should take notice.

If the refs are trying to convince us that they get most decisions correct (as todd keeps reminding us) then the bronco player throwing the ball into a roosters player on his knees but well out of the ruck was a joke.

It got worse. The parra player bouncing the ball into a warriors player, lying prone on the ground was just absolutely ridiculous.

Soon dummy halves are going to get the ball and run wildly after a retreating forward and lob the ball at him and the ref will have to award a penalty.

The fact that ref's were happy with those two instances as penalties is not only an embarrassment but it will have serial envelope pushes, Bellamy and Arthur working hard to exploit this joke to the fullest extent.

Terrible to watch, just embarrassing.

Its getting beyond a joke.

Last night Milford turned almost 180 and threw the ball straight at the Chooks player. There was no Brisbane player behind the Chook so who was Milford actually attempting to pass it to?

The fact that these actions are getting players a penalty shows just how out of hand things have gotten.

Easiest way to solve it IMO is to make it discretionary. If there wasn’t a player that was in a position to receive the ball then it’s milking and not a penalty. Video can intervene in real time. The parra one was one of the worst, most blatant examples I’ve seen

Penalty Bronco’s has a new meaning now!

I mentioned in another thread a potential fix might be that unless there is obvious intentional impeding it should just be re-set and play the ball again. Players will stop the milking because it will slow their play the ball and benefit the defensive line. Unfortunately this would rely on the dreaded concept of discretion which places added burden on the officials.

Totally agree I’ve seen a few before but that Will Smith one into Luke was just ridiculous and even more ridiculous when the ref blew the penalty , It just shows the mentality of the referee these days as they have no idea of the game itself
On that particular rule I empathize with the ref. It’s the rule book that needs changing. The rules say if it makes contact with a player in an offside position it’s a penalty. I’m not sure what else they can do. The nrl needs to change the rule

Someone learned alliteration at school this week.

The Parra one was the worst of the two, I don't understand how they can get this so wrong.

The ref continually called play on, play on then when the ball was throw deliberately down into the player they called the penalty. Absolute joke and embarrassing to watch. The refs this year have been the worst i have ever witnessed. As fans it is so hard to watch with so many poor decisions happening every week.

The Panthers game was terrible as well

There is a rule ... not sure of the wording .... but you can be penalised for an act not in the spirit of the game ......

That rule should have been, and would have been invoked if either Ref had the common sense that God gave artichokes ...

It was a pathetic and stupid spectacle ....

I still recall on my "illustrious high school footy career" (haha), this happened where the dummy half passed the ball as I was running (ambling) back to position, got me straight in the nuts, I must add it didn't hurt, but I fell over and landed on the ball. The ref thought I was hurt, called a scrum and gave us the feed, at a time when you had real scrums.

This is a cynical tactic to get a penalty and I would like to see referees use common sense and just make them play the ball again. If the guy lying in ruck ala Scam Smith is trying to deliberately slow the ruck down then a penalty is a fair call.

You are constantly seeing players now also look at the referee and demand that a player gets 10 in the bin. I would like to see that clamped down on as its now resembling soccer with this rubbish!

It's normally the leg tackler who has no choice but to be in this position. He has to let go and then if he tries to get in defensive line he gets in the way. Another reason why it is a disadvantage to go low. However good low tackles are entertaining, I guess that sais it all about the nrl

Another “innovation” introduced by Cam Smith and the Storm and endorsed by Greenberg.

Look for the rule to change on the spot when Manly do it and to give a penalty would cost the other side the match.

Gots me a gold star and early mark too!

grammer grandmer gammar grammah speaking proper next week!

Idiotic infringements incite insanity!

Have just seen a replay of Smith passing it to Luke on the ground. FMD and they gave Doesn't-matta a penalty for that???

How about the deliberate forward pass?

Simple solution is to simply reward legs tackles bu allowing the defender time to either clear the ruck or get back to market.
We should be encouraging low tackles, not penalising them by automatically losing the ruck contest.

The ruck needs to be slowed down anyway imo.
As another poster said, we are watching oztag right now.

Penalise the attacking team for not allowing the defender to get away - any contact with the tackling player is illegal and can be penalised.

Smyth does this all the time and has retired from rep footy so no longer needs to have special status.
