NEW assistant coach Matt Parish has challenged the Sea Eagles up-and-coming talent to step up and make their mark as the club chases back-to-back premierships next year.

“It is an exciting time to be here from my point of view with some exciting young players coming through,” Parish said.

In his first interview since being appointed as Geoff Toovey’s deputy, the experienced Parish said there were opportunities for players who performed.

He said the likes of Jamie Buhrer, Darcy Lussick, Michael Oldfield and Daniel Harrison were among the rising stars at the club.

“And we need a few more of this group to step up and play NRL next year,” Parish said.

“We need some guys here to jump out of the ground and put pressure on the guys in the top grade.

“As far as I am concerned they all start with a clean slate.

“Each time they step on to the training field we talk about who is going well and who is not.”

And Parish is looking forward to working with the club’s young players as much as he is with the experienced campaigners.

“What I am about is trying to help them improve on the footy field and also improve off the footy field as people. And the main thing is enjoy the footy,” he said.

Parish joined the Sea Eagles after six months in charge of English Super League club Salford.

“I returned from England a couple of Saturdays ago and I got a call from Geoff on the Sunday and started work on the Wednesday,” he said.

“Footy is about being in the right place at the right time and as it happened this has worked out really well for me.”

For a coach like Parish joining the Sea Eagles was a dream job despite the off-season upheavals.

“The core group of players are here from the past couple of years and there has been a really good culture that has been driven by the players,” Parish said.

“Des (Hasler) did a fantastic job in the time he was here but it is Geoff’s time now and he is his own man and has his own ideas,” Parish said.

“The thing about Geoff is he is so respected by the players and everyone in the place because he is just Manly through and through.”

I think that may just be a little shot at those turncoats who have departed the club. Good on you Matt stick it up them.

How many ex-players have you heard call Toovey the pound for pound toughest player they ever played against? Too many to count. When it comes to the get down and dirty, blood and guts stuff, Tooves is a specialist!

Even Tommy Raudonikus loves him!

What will Parish bring of his own to the team? Assistant anythings are always a bit role nebulous..so what will Tooves get him to specially develop in 2012? Any clues yet?

I am just really excited about the prospects of Tooves as head coach and Parish and Penna as assistants. They are all experienced, yet still coming in to their prime. They will keep the team motivated. And they will be hungry to win a grand final.
