Eagles contemptous of salary cap rumour
THE Sea Eagles said on Tuesday they refused to dignify, with any reaction, the scurrilous rumour that the club was over the salary cap.
And an NRL spokesman responded by saying: “This is just another rumour that people shouldn’t take any notice of.â€
The untrue story apparently began circulating when Sea Eagles officials Scott Penn, David Perry and coach Des Hasler were spotted going into an ordinary meeting at the NRL last week.
TAB Sportbet spokesman Matt Jenkins said the rumours were going around on forums and they saw a few bets on Manly missing the eight.
“It wasn’t anything major but there were a few rumours flying around that Manly had breached the cap and maybe some punters were just trying to get the overs,†Jenkins said.
TAB Sportsbet took the precaution of suspending all markets on teams missing the eight last Thursday. They also informed the NRL what they had done.
Jenkins said they would keep the market on all betting to miss the eight down this week because of all the Origin players going around in tonight’s decider.
“It will go back after the next round,†Jenkins said.
