One has to go ... who ?

He is also a ball hog, in my opinion, who refuses to pass the ball to his winger even if they are in the clear and he is not. He would rather hang onto it, and just about run his winger over the sideline before he would pass the ball to them.
Yep. I was actually thinking about that when I posed the question about combinations. Seems people value him most for his goal kicking but should that be the priority when DCE, Tavaga, and I think others can kick?

Really difficult because he seems to fit into the 'top bloke' category.

I value him because he is a very good goal kicker and a good winger.

Seibold needs to put him back where he belongs.

I think this is because he cant pass, at all, like has no idea.

I think Hoppa will go.

They dont seem to stay any where too long.

If he aint the captain-coach by Origin his father will want him off to one of the power house clubs like Parramatta or the Raiders.

Certainly dont think he will or should be moved on... his goalkicking alone is invaluable as we lose a LOT more games without Sandwich nailing them from the sideline...
I would just like to see him moved back to wing with Lehi and Talau/Koula in the centres...
Saab and Garrick on our edges is our best strike option imo...

I do tend to agree with that. While yes, we ended up 6th in the end in 2024 with Garrick in the centres, I can't help but think his best position is the wing.

I can see where he wants to play centre, its the position he played the most before coming to Manly. But sometimes you're just better suited to one position and not another and I do think in the case of Reubs, while he's a good centre, he's an even better winger.

The way clubs allocate their salary cap across different positions varies most likely based on their short and long term strategies.

My thoughts on how the cap is most effectively allocated against positions. This is subjective and has variables though to a point @Woodsie touched on is balance between position and remuneration spent. The below is based on the 30 man squad.

Key Positions: The Spine a large amount spent here due to the influence they have on a game my thought is 35% of the cap tied up here.

Halfback and Five-Eighth (the halves): These players are crucial as they often direct play and are responsible for strategic decisions on the field. A high-quality playmaker is vital for success, and as such, they usually attract significant investment.

Fullback: Modern fullbacks are attacking stalwarts often acting as an additional playmaker, also they read the opposition attack and have defensive capabilities.

Hooker: A top hooker is essential for controlling the game from the ruck and is often involved in both attack and defence.

Forwards vs. Backs:

Forwards: 40% spent here.

A significant percentage spent here, especially in the middles and edge forwards who are responsible for gaining ground and providing momentum.

Backs: 25% spent here.

While outside backs (centre’s and wingers) are important, I wouldn’t allocate as much of the cap here compared to the spine or forwards.

Development and Depth:

Young Talent: Investing in young talent and development of youth can be a strategic way to manage the salary cap. Locking in promising young players on longer-term deals before they reach their peak and demand higher salaries, is a key.

Depth Players: Having depth in the squad is crucial, especially with the physical demands of the NRL. There is a need to balance the spending to ensure there is capable backup options without overspending on bench players.

Lastly Market Dynamics: The player market can influence how clubs allocate their salary cap. For example, if a particular position is in high demand, clubs may need to adjust their spending to secure players.

Garrick had 7 try assists , 8 line break assists and 13 offloads in 2024 placing him 6th, 8th and 11th for all centres.

There’s no doubt in my mind he is a good attacking centre. But he struggled defensively. Hopefully that improves with another off season in the position.

Garricks defence will dramatically improve imo. He is a very quick learner and has adapted fast in the past.
I really rate his ability in attack and has incredibly high work rate and effort areas. He never gives up on any play and this is his real asset.
Once he sorts out his defence he is going to be massive for us.
I too was sceptical but I’m backing him in to go to another level this year.

Yeah. I agree on all points however he will become a whipping boy on here if his D doesn’t improve. Shoulders matai struggled in defence early in his career. So there is hope.

Still seems only two likely scenarios for outside back positions for 25 .
Turbo at one , Lehi or Talau on one wing , Saab on the other .
,Garrick and Koula in the centres
Or Lehi eventually to the back , Turbo to centre , Garrick to wing .
Taking into account , Lehi an automatic or expected selection at the back if Turbo has rep duties in any case
Again , more a question for 26 and beyond as Lehi and Talau open for offers after Nov the i st next season .
That is if Talau is re signed for next season and ongoing [ which would be desirable ], would not be on the scale of some of the other backline current payment levels but no doubt a different matter for Lehi soon .
Rueben 's defence to ideally improve a bit in the centres but not the main reason Manly have dropped some important games or being that much less competitive

I hope you're wrong. Yes, history suggests his father will interfere and it won't end well, but I'm willing to treat Lehi as an individual and give him the benefit of any doubt.

So far, he's developed rapidly within the Manly system. I think we've hurdled him well. He's a local, and he's said he always wanted to play for Manly. He's doing that now, and the club have earmarked him as our future fullback. There's a plan and a path for him going forward.

If we really want to keep him, I think he will stay. And if he doesn't? At least we would have done everything possible to try to keep him. Can't expect much more than that.

I think that's the key point - did we want any of the other hoppas?

Will Hoppa yes, but the money was too big. The others have been nothing to worry about them moving on.

Manly know Lehi is a star and would be planning the position and money to keep him happy from what i have read.

I know we’ve beaten the Garrick defence to death but he struggled as a defender during his junior days as a centre as well. It’s a big reason why he ended up on the wing when he first came into grade. He trained at centre a lot during those early years at the club but failed to satisfy the old coaching staff that was he was up to it.

I also think there’s an illusion that players just need to learn a bit more. When you look across the NRL, there are patterns of weakness around most players…unfortunately, Manly players are no different. They have strengths and weaknesses. I’m not saying it’s impossible to improve, it happens, but it’s rarely dramatic and under pressure, players weaknesses are often exposed, just not always as often.
