NRL to pay Clubs to build country academies ..

In the tele this morning ... 16 new league academies to be opened in rural NSW and QLD .. as part of the save the bush footy plan ..

The concept is to be fully funded by the NRL and involves each NRL Club taking on a region and establishing their own Rugby League Academy ..

This has been tried before ... but the sticking point was clubs were reluctant to fund them adequately ...

Sounds good ... anyone know where we should go ... also I think a part of it is to take one game a year to your designated region ...

Maybe if @globaleagle sobers up he can do his thing with the article ... by Nick Walshaw
I wouldn't mind seeing them down here in the Riverina, a lot of footy talent down here

Back in the day I sent this exact proposal to David Gallop and the NRL. In addition, my plan included that a club had first right to sign juniors from their region. They would also attract local Junior cap dispensation as the club was obliged to develop them as if they were a local junior.

I received back nothing more than a generic ‘Thanks, we’ll take it on board’, but didn’t expect anymore. Hopefully someone saw it and tucked it away for when they were in a position of more influence.

Don’t care either way, just hope it gets done and done properly.

Personally, I’d love Manly to have the Central West region, however Central Coast probably makes more sense. My proposal initially had region allocation decided by club member numbers in the regional areas to a degree.

We should target places like Coffs/Grafton if we can. That way we can retain the talent easier as the Northern Beaches lifestyle is a great draw card for kids from coastal areas who have to live in Sydney.

What is missing here is something that will create more interest in the regional towns. I know an academy will improve the skill level of who? The juniors. Having them ready to come to the city when they are 18 not 15 as it is now. Of course have a big brother presence but be assured once a club drops the ball, the locals will be pissed.
Everything suggested is great and has to happen BUT the senior grade competition and the local towns need a few up and coming and over the hill players injected into their teams.
History has shown the interest generated by ex first grade players going to country towns.
When we hear that players want to give back to the game which is usually going to a local club training session, the nrl need to supplement the contract to get these players into the country. This will grow supporter interest and player interest. Generate revenue for the club, towns and generate player registration. Improve the skill level of all ages and all levels of players.
As the meerkat says, simples.

Also,
A player at the end of his career usually wonders what he is going to do. They all can't be assistant coaches.
Going back a few decades, some players went bush because a job was guaranteed. This is also a way for helping mental health issues where these players have a chance of transitioning from nrl player to a member of the community.

Great idea in theory but the NRL should build them after consulting with the clubs on the locations.

Giving money to the clubs to do it isn't the best way to go about it. Some clubs invest in youth more than others and others come through and scoop up the cream at the end. Assigning an academy to each club can be done later on but the NRL should have one plan that is implemented across the board to ensure uniform support and show they are supporting regional grass roots RL, that's more important than club allegence in the global perspective.

I think V'Landys has the drive to get it off the ground but getting anything in Western NSW will be hard considering Panthers are heavily invested in that region.

My son was recruited into one of the many club affiliated Academies, he had been his Premier Grade team's Fullback for Three years and had many MOTM trophies, it soon became apparent that the Academy existed to promote the sponsor's son toward an NRL career. My son was swiftly booted to the wing, after a kid from Nth Qld was brought down to replace him. My son dropped league for Touch footy. Broke my heart. The kid from NQ turned out to be totally undisciplined, frequently refused to train, then allowed to play, he was awesome in attack but useless in defense. Then when he hit 17 signed with AFL. And the sponsor's son never made it to QLD cup.

The same bloke who dropped my son, had two weeks earlier awarded him a MOTM for a single tackle in the second half, which saved a try, and Jorge Taufua'ed the opposition winger.
I've maintained the rage for ten years.
