NRL 2018: NRL to launch crackdown on play the balls

Adam Pengilly

The NRL will launch a season-long crackdown on players who make no genuine attempt to play the ball correctly, ordering referees to lay down a marker from this weekend's trial games.

The practice of players simply rolling the ball through their legs rather than striking it back to a dummy half increased dramatically last year, prompting League Central to send out a pre-Christmas edict to clubs it wouldn't be tolerated in 2018.

The NRL has sent its whistleblowers out to all clubs over summer to work with clubs on cleaner play the balls.

"There will be a much greater focus on the play the ball and a genuine attempt to play the ball," NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said.

"I think you'll see the referees be very vigilant with that. The challenge for the referees is they must maintain that vigilance all year.

"There's little things and big things and little things like the play the ball are big things to fans. The feedback last year when I was doing fan forums around the country was not to do with finances, but to do with the play the ball, referees and judiciary.

"We've spoken about it with the competitions committee and coaches and the referees have been given a strong directive."

Most NRL clubs will have their first hit-out of the season this weekend, while the Dragons will take on Super League visitors Hull before the Rabbitohs clash with Wigan in an ANZ Stadium double-header on Saturday evening.

Penrith's clash with the Roosters at Panthers Stadium will be the other pre-season hit-out in Sydney.

On top of more stringent policing of the play the ball, Greenberg is throughout the year set to use GPS data collated by clubs to further examine whether interchanges should be reduced from eight to six to bring more little men into the game.

"We'll look at the data and we wanted to get through the two years where it was 10 to eight," Greenberg said.

"We're going to work with the clubs on all of the GPS tracking information and we're going to do a piece of work this year to consider what that might look like in the future.

"I think we found a really good balance when we came back from 10 to eight with interchange.

"Fatigue is an important part of modern rugby league. We've got to make sure we balance power, speed and skill so all body shapes can play the game. I'm really pleased with where we're at with that balance and I'm confident we're going to see a great spectacle."

This has the potential to turn games around if it is not applied consistently...imagine what that would do to the tipping comp

Look with only 27 signed up for this year (compared to over 100 last year) there are more of these posts coming up.

Without being blasé that is not enough to keep the site going without Dan reaching into his own pocket. If you can get on board and support the site...plus you stand the chance of being in one of GE’s weekly updates

What's this weekly update you speak of? And this competition?

Didn't they do this two years ago.....

I thought that was when the ruled you didn't have to actually put your foot on it...then it escalated into what we had last year.

Another well thought out rule by Toddy that turned into a debacle.

The refereeing, bunker shemozzle and slap on the wrist fines instead of REAL penalties for foul play/ bad sportsmanship.

So lets reverse our f$$$ up from 2 years ago and do nothing about the REAL problems.

How in hell did this guy get the job AND keep it.
Astonishing.

Of all the fundamental issues wrong with the game at the moment down to grassroots level, they have the CEO announce a 'crackdown' on this.

Talk about picking the low-hanging fruit.

Pfft he never bothers with the last place getters. Its all about the glory for him... And his teeth.

Doesn't seem to be many left!

Don't the officials crack down on this every few years.... Penalise Manly for it if they are in front, and then forget about it from week 9 onwards? (edit: Oops, others have already said it, sorry).

Tom will be in trouble. He's not played the ball properly since he's been 15 years old!

id rather see them work out a way to reward 1 on 1 tackles like jake does & stop the 'get 3 blokes to hold him up & when the ref calls held drop him' type of tackle.

When are they going to stop the Melbourne captain from raping people in the ruck and slowing the play the balls. It’s the biggest blight on the game.

As for this crack down it will last until rd 3 it happens everything season and it won’t be consistent.

I was thinking about this last year.
When tackled you should have to play the ball exactly where the ball ended up, not where you got up and strided forwad to. So what if your legs are in front or behind the ball, If you move away from the point of where the ball should be then the defence is free to move up before you even play the ball.

Nothing will ever be done to golden boy scam .. At best Greensprog will just hand over some lube and tell the rest of the clubs to deal with it.

Didn't they do this two years ago.....only to forget it and move on to the next flavour of the month thing within about 2-3 rounds?

Yep, i remember the All stars game Taupau just signed with us. Played
the ball, got penalised (Manly loading) and that was the last time a player got done for it.

Glad to see Todd is on the front foot with the big issues.

“A genuine attempt to play the ball” is not good enough. Either the ball is played properly or it isn’t.

How about a genuine attempt not to throw a forward pass?
Or a knock on- I genuinely attempted to catch it, so let it go ref.

I guess there is nobody at the nrl who understands the game, or nobody brave enough to challenge the crap they put out in statements.

This rule has been ignored for a couple of seasons , players and coaches exploited it big time. Two players in particular basically rolled the ball between their legs full time as part of so called quick play the balls to benefit the team . Fifita and Kasiano the main culprits and the refs just ignored it even though it was illegal.
