THE NRL are considering a potential reduction in the interchange, according to NRL 360 host Paul Kent.

The interchange currently sits at eight and could be dropped to six as a way to combat the injury toll across all clubs.

The NRL’s competition committee will meet on Friday and the topic will be discussed.

“There are 74 players this week not playing rugby league because they’re injured,” Kent told NRL 360 on Tuesday.

“There are already a dozen players who are out for the season nine rounds in.”

Kent said there’d been a drop in injuries since the NRL originally reduced the interchange from 10 to eight at the start of 2016.

“In 2015 when we played with 10 interchange, there was 1018 games missed because he injury,” he explained.

“ ... Last year we went down to 813 when we had eight interchange.

“This year we’re tracking again for last year’s figures.

“So there is an assumption there, purely from an injury point of view, by tacking out continually fresh players out of the game, the game slows and some of the high impact injuries we’re seeing are no prevalent.”

Kent said in his discussions with Todd Greenberg that the NRL chief executive believed the game had a better feel to it when the interchange was dropped from 10 to eight and that now was the time to consider reducing it further.

Cronulla veteran Luke Lewis backed the changes and said the game had been crying out for it over the past two to three years.

“It’ll bring the small guys back, players like the Preston Campbells who are nippy around tired forwards,” Lewis told NRL 360.

“Coaches will have to restructure the way they do their interchange.

“I think it’ll quicken up the ruck and it’ll solve a lot of the questions when it comes to the big contracts front rowers are asking.

“If you can play 80 minutes, then you can start asking for bigger money.”

Good idea. However, those of you who watched our successful Under 16 team will know that it was full of huge boys, so the current trend in RL is that bigger is better.
Reducing the interchange should see a re-balancing of the Polynesian influence and give smaller kids a chance to compete. The way the game is headed I foresee it being a rarity to see a non-Polynesian playing, in much the same way that in elite US basketball it is rare to see a non-African-American.

Pfffft, great. Then we'll be able to watch a bunch of fat old turtles dragging their butts around the footy field.

Just because you yobbos are all middle aged plus, doesn't mean we want our team to play like you lot!

Ya softies!

..and when you have to stay on the field with an injury or compete with 12 men because of no replacements ... or just to get up and make that tackle or run when your completely knackered is what our past legends were forged from ..

When the likes of Johnny Gibbs, Mayes, Junee and Blake start to run riot because of tiring behemoths in the centre .....

Football played the way it was meant to .... not just a continuous conga line of props hitting it up for 80min,

PSS ... Jake was born for the old style of footy ..

PSSS .... and keep giving me cheek and you may not make middle age plus you coat hanger for a floor rug ....

This can only be a good thing. Loved it in the good old days when the game started to open up when defences tired with the little men taking control.

Looks like Barrett is preparing already going by last weeks game! Brown did not even get on the field.

toovey rarely used the full bench either. I remember him getting drilled for doing so on these very forums!

Big forwards having to continue to retreat 10 meters fatigued with more limited interchange , could be a tired out prop - position then .

Would be great to see it drop back to 6. Might going a bit too far but I think 4 interchanges a game would be perfect. There is a trend of bigger props in the modern game but like with AFB, coaches will work to keep improving their fitness and stamina. Addin now plays about 50 minutes a game with Marty playing 60. There's no reason why they can't make it work with 4-6 interchanges.

We may have 8 interchanges officially; however, HIA protocol means we actually have more like 10/11. A reduction to 6, then 4 would be great.

There are more players playing above 110kg in the NRL than ever before- several 118 kg plus : these guys will have to drop a lot of bulk and bring back the fatigue factor back in and many more opportunities for smaller faster players. 6 interchanges is still plenty: certain to see plenty of leg and arm injuries get turned into head bin HIA:
I would like to see either :
5 bench players : not interchangeable- once your off your off.
Or 3 on bench and 1 interchange reserve - up to 3 times. Which gives max 6 changes.
Definitely need smaller players with speed brought in to the mix. The big dinosaurs are causing a lot injuries .

My observations of the NRL suggest to me that 6 months after any reduction in interchanges to reduce injuries somebody will get injured as a result of "fatigue" and they will then increase interchanges to reduce injuries ......

I thought Bennett had some good points during the week. If the nrl want tired players... then there are multiple time wasting scenarios that happen in the game. Get rid of those and fatigue can set in even with keeping the same number of interchanges.

The one where a sin binned player sloooooowly walks off for one. (That doesn't happen every game obv)
Stopping when a player has a 'cramp' etc.

etc - read his article for more
