NRL coaches in firing line as league looks to curb off-field spending

Not a problem for us, as Manly only got to go to Mount Kosciuszko, and they had to carry their own canoe

This is one of the dumbest and most meaningless gestures the NRL has come up with in an attempt to make themselves relevant. This will do absolutely nothing to change the game we all watch every week. It's a worthless waste of time that will be circumvented just like the salary cap. What a joke the NRL is, seriously.

Agree, but once again the sole purpose of the idea (like the salary cap) is not to make a level playing field ... but to stop the dumb clubs sending themselves broke.

So given mad coaches want to buy "power bracelets" and employ voodoo specialists ... it's probably a good idea.

What planet are you on?

It's a way of bridging the gap between the power clubs and the lesser clubs without player backlash and revolt. The issues with decreasing the cap for the player roster, is it will cause a similar situation to what is going with in cricket at present. It will also cause a situation similar to what we saw in the mid 2000s with players leaving for England and various other codes to earn more $$$.

At least this way, there are only 16 coaching positions in the NRL and it's a specialty role, so capping a coaches earnings is hardly going to see them rush off to coach the wallabies, and frankly fans don't turn up each week to watch coaches do their thing. If coaches walk in disgust, it's hardly going to spoil the spectacle for fans. Further, support staff are largely anonymous in the eyes of the public, again a backlash from them is hardly going to cause a ripple of care in the grand scheme of things.

What it will do, is stop clubs like the Broncos spending thousands more than other clubs on sports science, strength and conditioning and psychology in order to get ahead of the rest, whilst clubs like Manly and Newcastle operate on a shoe string budget with 3-4 full time support staff.

hahaha just like the salary cap stopped the Broncos buying any player they wanted eh. Glad to see you have such confidence in Teddy and the rest of the clowns at the NRL administering this and I'm sure there'll be no loop holes so their favorite teams can get away with anything, wink wink, nudge nudge.

Plus what I said in terms of the onfield action being unchanged by this stands, and that's where the bigger problem in the game seems to be.

the afl have been over this and i think the nrl could learn from them(again).
have a look here:
Stricken AFL clubs have been thrown a lifeline.
Financially stricken AFL clubs have been thrown a lifeline with a bold and sustainable plan announced yesterday that should better guarantee the competitiveness of the competition.

could you imagine 'good old nick' at the roosters & the broncos ceo's response if the nrl adopted something similar

They won't be able to get around this salary cap on staff, so yes it will work. Storm and donkeys have countless staff, it's ridiculous.. time to even it up a little
