NRL 2016: The missing ingredients needed for each bottom eight side next year — season reviews

First Grader
Arrivals: Shaun Lane (Warriors).

Exits: Jamie Lyon (retired), Siosaia Vave (Sea Eagles), Josh Starling, Liam Knight, Blake Leary, Nathan Green, Isaac John, Jayden Hodges (released).

The fatal blow: Injuries. Some of the club’s most experienced players in Brett Stewart, Jamie Lyon, Daly Cherry-Evans, Steve Matai, Jamie Buhrer and Dylan Walker all had lengthy stints on the sideline this year. You can’t build momentum and combinations with players dropping like flies.

The shining light: The Trbojevic brothers. Tom and Jake really made their presence known this year, with some experts calling for their inclusion in the NSW Origin side. Tom’s performances at fullback this season have fans already licking their lips for next season, while Jake’s made the lock position his own. Special mention to Darcy Lussick, who enjoyed his best ever season, proving an astute buy back from Parramatta.

The biggest challenge: Keeping stars on the field. The maroon and whites have the firepower to cause plenty of damage, they just need their best players on the field in order to build those combinations. Their attack also struggled at times this year, with poor fifth-tackle options a common occurrence.

The roster fix: A five-eighth. The Sea Eagles went for Dylan Walker to fill the void of Kieran Foran this year but it barely lasted half the season. Jamie Lyon reluctantly took over but they really lacked a player to complement DCE. Melbourne’s Blake Green is believed to be joining them, in what should prove a very smart acquisition.
