I'm seeking clarification on the role of the video ref.
I thought he could only rule on tries, but in the Canberra-Newcastle match the refs missed an incident. The Canberra player stayed down, hurt. The play moved on a tackle or more. Then the ref stopped the play. The incident was replayed and the ref then penalised the Newcastle player (rightly). But the question is: when can the video ref intervene?
Our rules are so convoluted now for a person like me who has been watching and playing the sport for more than 55 years.

Yes they can but only if the indecent is deemed severe enough to be a reportable offence (which is NRL code for they can pick and choose)
