Godfrey five-eigth for Bears encounter

12:00a.m. 15th August 2009

By Steve Zemek

Rob Godfrey may be wearing the unfamiliar number six on his back when the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles take on the Burleigh Bears tomorrow, however, his instructions are simple: listen to Trent.

Godfrey will slot into five-eighth in the place of the injured Paul Cohen for the Pizzey Park clash, the first time the utility has been named in the position for the Sunshine Coast.

But he said not to expect him to handle playmaking duties. That would rest with gun halfback Trent Hodkinson.

Instead, Godfrey said he would be used as another wide-running backrower, something that sits comfortably with him given his lack of experience in the halves.

“I’ll just be another forward,” he said.

“Trent will be running the show.

“It just gives us a few more options off the ball really. He is a playmaker. He does it well for us.

“We’ve just got to do our job and he takes care of the rest, really.”

Godfrey has been a quiet yet consistent contributor for the Sea Eagles all year.

While he has more often than not been used off the bench, a string of good performances have caught the eye of the Manly Sea Eagles.

Sunshine Coast CEO Justin Veivers said the NRL premiers had been “asking a lot of questions” about the 22-year-old New Zealander and tracking his progress keenly.

While an NRL call-up isn’t on the cards in the immediate future, he could become the first Sunshine Coast-contracted player to make his debut for Manly, a reversal of the normal run of the two sides’ feeder agreement.

This weekend the Sunshine Coast takes on the Burleigh Bears in what appears a massive mismatch.

The Sunshine Coast is in the midst of a remarkable winning streak, having lost only once since the two sides met in round 10 and having scored 110 points in their last two outings.

The Sea Eagles could also sneak into the top three with a win if the Central Comets down third-placed Northern Pride.

The eighth-placed Bears on the other hand are in danger of losing touch with the top six.

They will definitely be looking to avoid the humiliation of becoming the first Burleigh side to lose five matches in a row.

Meanwhile, coach Brandon Costin is expected to be re-signed as Sea Eagles coach for 2010.

Veivers said the club was waiting to see what assistant coach Leon Cleal’s plan were for next year, and would make a decision based around that.

However, the Daily believes the former Canberra Raider will be offered a contract after leading the side to a finals berth in their maiden year.
