MANLY supremo Ken Arthurson is backing calls for the NRL to establish an independent tribunal to handle some off-field incidents.

Arthurson watched in pain as Manly opened its premiership defence with a 34-12 defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

Suspended fullback Brett Stewart was another hopeless on-looker, serving the first of his four-match suspension for bringing the game into disrepute.

Rumours surfaced on Monday of some sections of the Sea Eagles keen to pursue an injunction against the NRL to prevent the NSW custodian from missing another game.

A source close to the Sea Eagles told The Manly Daily Stewart’s counsel, Geoff Bellew, is “very angry with the NRL” for banning his client, fearing the suspension could prejudice the player against allegations of sexual assault.

Some of these questions are very valid. If the NRL is saying that the Stewart situation has nothing to do with the sexual assault allegations, it is clear that there are double standards. The Broncos last year were not afforded the same level of suspension, despite Lockyer's admission of a drunken binge and the three players in the toilet were hardly acting in a reputable way. Gallop has opened Pandora's box! He just has to hope his current poster boy is able to keep his nose clean - something that past reputation suggests might be difficult???
