My top 10 experiences supporting Manly

What's the game where Sharp has taken charge. We suck so bad. Then it's like they say ahh let's just go back to what we used to do. One almighty come back. Was it against the donkeys at Brooky. I think I have a memory of Terry Hill scoring a try or a break. But it stands out re the magical turn around.

50 years and counting supporter here too .....

Great thread .,.... thank you. I loved sitting in the Sheridan Stand too.

There are some good memories that have already been discussed ... a couple of others

That 1978 finals series ...... . That was an unbelievable feat such a tough team with some absolute club legends. In the pre golden point era I am pretty sure we had to win two replayed mid week drawn games in the finals to win that one and think we had to play 6 finals games in about 3 weeks in a pretty brutal era to win that '78 GF. I remember wagging school to go and watch the replay GF against the sharks.

I can't remember the year but we had a home final against the Bulldogs and we won on the bell with I think a Brett Stewart special, Anyway my main memory was more the atmosphere at Brookie that night it was just absolutely electric. The players fed off it and It was just nuts. I kept the ticket stub in my wallet for over a decade. I lost my voice from cheering and I could barely speak for a few days afters

I loved the 61 to 0 v Dargons too ..... I was with two of my best mates who are Dargons supporters. Back to the Harbord Hilton after to celebrate. Their shout and big night and 30 years later we all still remember that game and that score .......

I still think nothing beats the 40 0 GF .... what a day that was. What a day that was ......

Battle of Brookie ..... classic.....

Just so many good memories over the years watching them play at Brookie.. Special place.

I stayed overnight outside the gates of the SCG, always a unique experience, I was already on a high as my Carlton Blues won the VFL grand final the day before and we listened to the BBC world service to listen to the English football, I got about two hours sleep, we sat on the seats in front of the hill, stinking hot day, watched the reserve grade lose their grand final, very much a game of squandered opportunities and after a tight half hour, Cliffy scored to put us in control and the rest of the game was tight, huge relief when the siren rang, huge celebrations at the ground and later at the club. It was a miracle that I worked on the Monday after lol, what a highlight that weekend was!!
It was , when Cliffy darted in for that Try I knew we were home.

Great day ( long night )

I've followed manly since I was about 15, have had some thrills at Brookie and some other grounds over the years, sometimes following closely other times just keeping one eye on their fortunes... I'd have to say joining Silvertails is one of my top experiences as a Sea Eagles fan! For a lot of the years I followed Manly the people I knew either weren't into footy or just didn't like Manly.
But on silvertails there's always some others to share the jubilation or despair/fury at the ref/sack that player etc.
So even tho the odd poster drives me crazy at times ... yeah, it's one of my best experiences as a Manly fan! @:)🤷‍♂️ @:D

Hey there everyone, 2025 makes it the 50th year of supporting Manly and I want to let you know what are my top ten moments that I enjoyed the most over this time. Please note that these are games I actually attended.

Moment 10:

The 1976 grand final win. I was 9 years of age, my Dad started taking me to home games at Brookvale, we resided in Avalon and it was so much fun growing up on the northern beaches when the club dominated the league, that grand final win was extra special as the majority of my family support Parramatta and I remember my hero Wombat Eadie kicking 5 pressure goals to win the match.

Moment 9:

Slaying the Dragons 61-0 at Brookvale in July 1994. The Dragons were in the previous 2 grand finals and were a decent team and on this day everything Manly did turned to gold and they inflicted a record defeat on Saints, I remember Ridgey kicking his 10th goal to get us over 60 points and if was a Sunday arvo with 22K crowd there, that was a special day.

Moment 8:

Hammering the Broncos at Brooky in 1995. The score was 23-4, the day the Ken Arthurson stand opened and it was a significant day in that the Broncos stood for everything we resented in relation to Super League and there was 25K Manly fans who wanted blood. I don't think I've ever seen a Manly home game where the locals were as intimidating. The Broncos were no chance, red letter day for Manly!

Moment 7:

Watching Manly beat Canberra in 1987, it was a scorching hot day and Manly were very much the better side, created most of the chances, bombed at least 5 tries which made the win harder. I remember Kevin Ward play the game of his life, coming out from the UK, Cliffy won the Churchill medal and he was amazing that day, I remember getting back to a packed leagues club and welcome home the players, that was a great moment.

Moment 6:

Watching Manly beat the Bulldogs at Belmore 8-7 in 1982. This was a win totally against the odds, that day we were reduced to 11 men, had a huge penalty count against us and managed to cling on to a win in the pouring rain. Belmore was often a graveyard for us back in that era and there was an almighty brawl at the southern shed where our fans were subjected to a lot of abuse and before you knew it total melee and the cops had a hell of a job breaking it up. One of my favourite away days.

Moment 5:

The battle of Brookvale against the Melbourne Storm. Wow what a night, so much at stake, just before the finals and Manly were really fired up and shot out to a good lead before all hell broke loose and drizzle player Blair had a cheap shot at one of our players and he and Gifty were binned before it totally erupted near the entrance to the field, it was wild and so many players were suspended after that game. I thought it really showed we were primed to win in 2011 and the Drizzle remain a huge foe for us!

Moment 4:

The 2011 grand final, our last premiership and again inclement weather made it a tough day for the players, they outlasted the Warriors 24-10 and I will always remember watching Snake and Gifty score tries and how Jamie Lyon capped it off with a try at the end. The world was against us that week and the team did so well and won a fantastic premiership.

Moment 3:

Winning 64-12 at Parramatta stadium, round 3 in 1988. That was an amazing day and as Manly buried the whingers on their own patch, try and try was scored and with 15 to go their fans left in droves, it did not make up for the grand final losses in 82 and 83, that was agony for all of us. It was satisfying to smash them and give them a hiding they will never forget.

Moment 2:

The 2008 grand final win was the perfect day for Manly fans. It was also very emotional for a lot of us older fans who watched the chaotic and dreadful Northern Eagles era, where we lost our club and that was heartbreaking and within 6 years we were premiers and we destroyed our enemy in the Drizzle who toyed with us the previous year. To see the Beaver score his try brought tears to my eyes as he was a constant for so many years and the joy back at the club was amazing as the team took its revenge on the previous year and very satisfying to see Michael Crocker dealt with after what he did to Snake the previous year.

Moment 1:

You notice that my nickname on here is Sheridan Stand and there is a good reason for that. The 1978 finals was without a doubt the most satisfying time to support Manly, it did not start well, we were huge favourites to beat the Sharks in the first final and perished 12-17. That meant we had Parramatta to deal with and over the 2 games we were under the cosh and behind in both matches. The courage the team showed to get off the canvass to draw the first game and then come from behind to win the replay was breathtaking. To then back up 3 days later, playing a full strength Wests team who were minor premiers and to silence them 14-7 ranks as one of the gutsiest wins ever! Then a grand final where it did not go our way for most of the match and we got an 11 all draw and faced a grand final replay 3 days later, wow that team became immortal for me as they smashed the Sharks 16-0 and the Wombat tortured them. Tuesday the 19th will always be a special day for me.

Well that wraps it up, I would to learn about others favourite moments supporting Manly?
Great post
I too are a similar vintage and watched all the 4 Grand Finals of the 70,s
The first 2 with our local footy side ( under 9,s ) who played in Manly colours had our coach and manager pile us kids in a charger and panel van to take us to the games
Oh yes
It was the Sheridan stand we sat 2 rows from the wrought iron fence on second level

76 and 78 we were old enough ( not really) to sleep outside the ground and bombard Rex and Barry with fruit and knock off the big league publications that were delivered the night before

I think the 78 run to winning the GF was as good as it gets for any young fan and didn’t miss a game . Still don’t think I have experienced the same buzz ) although off point , Jimmy jumping from the trapeze at the circus animal concert was close )

So that is 1-4

2V playing and MOM at brookie to beat the British lions with crusher explosive would be 5

Gifty & Snake both scoring in 2011 and the gift grubber kick is 6 + medal winner and sticking it to Gallop
Stewart bros today would still be champions

40 mil makes any highlight reel with the Beaver try make the list at 7

Fatty lifting the trophy in 87 with cliffy in tow is special and rewarding and 8

Battle of brooky was an eerie atmosphere from the start of the afternoon and the players were as ready as they have ever been
( confirmed by the legend himself that they made a pact to not take a backward step ) gets 9

Any time we beat souffs at Redfern and had to fight your way out of the ground gets 10

( we should never have let them back in the comp )
Go manly says
Go manly

Some great moments here. And what a great thread. Nothing tops 2008 GF for me. My brother got us tickets for my 30th right on halfway. Just to add to that though. Our finals run that year must have been the most dominant of any team in history. Two tries against all finals and scores of 38,32 and 40 for.

What a great list. Some great memories.

I was at a couple of those games listed and the Battle of Brookie would have to be my favourite. There's really no words to describe the atmosphere that night, you really had to be there.

A couple of games in recent years were also great to be at. The win over Penrith (2014) in the last minute when Tom Symonds scored in the corner and Soward went off at the ref about the clock. That was a great afternoon.

And even last years semi against the Bulldogs. Sitting amongst so many hostile and abusive Bulldog fans and being behind the 8 ball most of the day, that try from Koula and the kick from Garrick to get the lead made for a memorable afternoon.

But my my favourite memory will always be my very first game I watched live. It was the 1969 Semi against the Dragons. A skinny 8 year old, standing on the Hill amongst this wall of screaming tree trunks. Only catching glimpses of the players when the wind blew. But then this bloke next to us who had some kind of home made esky, let me stand on it so I could finally see the field. Almost wet my pants when I saw Bob Batty for the first time live.

I remember things were looking pretty grim until we came home strong to win 19-10. It was the same day I got my sad looking Sea Eagle you see in my avatar. But it's still holding together @:D. It was the greatest day.

Lots of great wins,

The first WCC in leeds after 40 nil, was immense. The build , Arriving in our bus , all decked out, on the puss since 9 days ago, the singing, the people, the after win party, drinking champagne from a shoe, wait that was the pre warm up trip but a great mix of tragics virtually unknown to eachother before hand and so cold the only solution was to have a little tipple in a cozy bar and hope its ****ter wasnt in the backlane once you take your 12 jumpers off

Thanks @Mark from Brisbane

That was one of the more exciting finishes that i can recall and there were quite a few over time .
Think that Manly were down something like 16 - 4 at one stage , could have been even 20 - 4 in the 2 nd half until that quite amazing comeback .
Think that tries or consecutive tries by Phil Adamson , Daniel Gartner and that final real good effort by Terry Hill and some good goal kicking by Brendon Reeves drew Manly finally level with a few minutes to play .
Had the ideal opportunity for a late match field goal attempt but Cliffy inexplicably tried a short kick ahead for nil result and just held out the Broncs then to snatch such an improbable draw .
Pretty good comeback against the Dogs in the early 80 ]s as well with Manly well down for a good part of the match then finally storming home for a win .

Great thread, thanks @sheridanstand78

56 years for me.

I have been to 7 of our 8 Grand Final wins (missed 1996) – so that is 7 of the 10 highlights.

The other 3 are games that stand out in my memory from so many.

1982 Major Semi Final, 20-nil smashing of Parramatta at the SCG. I knew that day we would win the premiership (we didn’t – that is for a ‘greatest heartbreak’ thread).

1987 round 13, 48-14 demolition of Balmain at Brookie. The Tigers were leading the comp at that point, we cut them to pieces, just beautiful football. I knew we would win the premiership…

2008 Preliminary Final, 32-6 over the Warriors at SFS. A dominant, arrogant performance by a great side, ready to destroy our greatest enemy the next week.

Reminds me of the 95 Final , we were far and away the best side all year.

And we get a 7th tackle try against us that changed the course of the game.

And don’t start me on that ****show that was 97.

2013 destroyed my love for the game with that blatant forward pass and refereeing display in that second half.

1978 GF Replay was amazing, I skipped school to go.
2008 GF Was the best, followed by 2009 WCC in England.

Many favourites that have already been described by others. One that I don't think has been mentioned was the 2011 Preliminary Final against the Cowboys. Manly down 8-0 at half time. In the second half we just went berserk. Ended up winning 42-8.

However, my all time favourite is the 1972 Grand Final. I was there as a 9 year old with my late father. He was a Manly man from day dot. Was at the first ever game at Brookvale Oval and every game he could get to thereafter. Played for the club in the 50s including the Reserve Grade Grand Final win in 1954 which was the club's first premiership in any grade. His first grade career was cruelly cut short by a severe knee injury at age 22. Many of his mates played in the Grand Final losses during the 50s and 60s, so I think that made 1972 even sweeter for him. In fact I think it was possibly one of the happiest days of his life (probably third only to his wedding day and the birth of his second son 😎).

I still have memories of the day. We had streamers on our car as was a popular thing to do in those days. Getting there early and getting bustled by the crowd trying to get in. Looking in awe at the size of Mark Harris and thinking, as the young centre that I was, how would you tackle that? An amazing game of course. Fantastic performances from all players. Then the traffic jam around Moore Park heading home with horns blaring and big groups of Manly supporters cheering every car with Manly streamers. What a day it was!

it is a great thread.

50+ years here as well.

Haven't been to a Grand Final or even Brookvale Oval (yet), no-one will go with me 😉.

Great memory of September 16, 1978, watching an Ali fight earlier in the day followed by the 11-11 draw with Cronulla. Igor's bomb that resulted in our try sticks in the mind.

SYDNEY RUGBY LEAGUE GRAND FINAL: Cronulla 11 drew with Manly 11 Grand final replay is set for Tuesday - The Canberra Times (ACT : 1926 - 1995) - 17 Sep 1978

Also skipped school to watch the replay. That winning/drawing finals run went some way to covering the disappointment of losing Bozo that was still fairly fresh.

2013 was disgraceful, and more than just “ that blatent forward pass” .

I remember at the time seeing a YouTube presentation on all the things Hayne ignored that went the Roosters way , that ultimately determined the result.

We were all over them , and in the space of scout 20 minutes he ( Hayne ) changed the game.

He stole a grand final victory from us, without a doubt.
