More DT Crapola - Gambling hypocrisy

Admirable objective. It would be nice to watch a match without being bombarded by betting ads, and I often wonder what kids growing up these days think the game is all about.

But sadly the horse has bolted. Greenberg let the betting companies take over the game years ago. They won’t relinquish control now.

Exactly.
So...will they tel FOX and the other broadcasters that they don't want betting ads during their games?

Of course not because they know those ads help pay for the TV rights that pays their respective grants from the governing bodies.

I have modest wagers on making the GF and winning the comp (it's only a matter of time, lol)

So all the franchises mentioned benefit to some extent from casino and/or clubs. All of which have taken a significant hit during the pandemic. Take the ‘moral high ground’ against those nasty online guys, much better to get back to a club to punt your weekly paycheck.

The media release to news agencies was headed

NRL clubs move to distance themselves from gambling industry

This is simply not true.
As others have pointed pretty much each of the clubs listed still receive funds from partners that make significant money from gambling.

That is not illegal and our team have also benefitted from funding by Lottoland previously and Pointbet currently.

Even a rudimentary knowledge of where clubs get funding from makes the statement so farcical.

A case in point that makes the whole initiative and spin so ridiculous is that despite many venues being closed due to COVID, The Juniors Group (Souths Juniors) still reported Poker machine revenue increased by $8,072,000 (30%!!!) in their 20/21 annual report https://www.thejuniors.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/AnnualReport_2021_WEB.pdf (Page 15)

In fairness, page 19 shows that they support quite a number of community groups (although the dollar amount is not reported).

But ultimately, The company is a "partner" of Souths and people visiting their clubs lost nearly $27 million dollars on gambling machines and I'm not even going to go down the "Rabbit hole" of Crown Casino...

So, to go public and preen themselves about how they are being proactive in reducing the impact of problem gambling is just spin and another example of just how gullible they must think the public are....

@globaleagle as our literary and media expert .. how do rate this piece of journalism by buzz sloshfield ?

Paragraph 1 says .. "jarryd Hayne and parra player Nathan brown have been involved in an ugly incident outside a parra hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning"

In the last paragraph he says "A police spokesman said there have been no reports of an incident outside the hotel "

Sounds like he'd been with them all night when he filed that report.

This snippet comes from the mole:

Club in early turmoil

It wouldn't be the NRL without drama - even after one round.

Senior players at one losing club last weekend are openly questioning their coach's use of the interchange, which was baffling at best.

They are also referring to one of their team-mates - behind his back of course - as a 'cat'.

Early days… but not good signs.

If in the unlikely event that there is a ring of truth to it, could it be Manly with the selection of Koala on the bench, and the player being besmirched being Tent?

This is even better than nick's free cars.

The players' dividends from the investment in their chairman's company (and newscorp's) are likely to be huge don't you reckon? Nice top-up outside the salary cap. Nothing to see here.

Wow.
Where to begin with that’s wrong with this?
The comparison with players holding shares in listed betting outfits is ridiculous.
The opportunity to invest in a private startup is only offered to the privileged few - usually those who can offer strategic value to the business, have many millions of capital, or both.
So what do the Storm players have to offer, other than playing for the Storm? Are they going to advise Tripp and News how to build up the company?
And I haven’t even covered the part about it being a betting company and the suggestion that the NRL Chair could be involved…
