Mid-season signing targets

I’m happy with AFB and Marty upfront but in terms of players off contract next year, I would go after Shannon Boyd. I think he could resurrect his form from 2016 in a new environment ie: away from Sticky.
It’s easy to forget he’s played for the Kangaroos before the Blues. He was not overawed in the Roos Jersey and he was good enough for Mal to keep picking him each match.
We could make Lachlan Croker more useful this year by telling Shannon how much better it is to live in Manly over Canberra, “C’mon Shan-Man, let Manly make you great again”

But then we have salary cap problems so never mind.. We couldn’t afford that callibre of Prop for a bench position so nothing to see here ..

I’d still go after Carney at this stage

With cap space so tight, we really can’t ‘afford’ to look at anyone until we settle on a true 7 (even if they wear the 6 on their back)

Given we are probably light on up front and appears we will lose Darcy we probably need to sign at least one forward to complete our roster.

Assuming one spot goes to Moses Suli I’d like to see the final two spots to be filled by the below possibilities (in order).

Josh Papali (perhaps raiders would pay part of his contract)
Todd Carney
Suaia Matagi
Willis Meehan (if NRL will clear)
Dave Taylor
Suaso Sue
Tim Grant
Luke Page
Nathaniel Neale

Thoughts or additions?

Noel Cleal ?
Sorry
But It brought a smile thinking about it which I have not done since the debarcle on Sunday

Next year we shouldn’t re-sign Uate, Croker or Brown and elevate cheapies in Suli, Fainu and Metcalf. We should also release Lussick and that combined will give us roughly 800k to play with to purchase 2 players.

Darcy is on about $400k from memory, Uate was $500k at Newcastle but we were carrying around $250-300k. You’d assume Brown would be on $300-350k, and Suli, Fainu would come in on $100k. Metcalf and Croker would be a straight swap $ wise.

That leaves roughly $800k to replace Lussick and bring in a 5/8 if one is available. According to Gorman we are $350k under the cap for next year and we have a $330k cap reduction penalty - leaving us $20k in the black as our starting position. The issue would be re-signing others to upgrades like Api and Siro.

So basically I take it back - we’re stuffed.

Can’t we just get a few bodgey TPA’s like everyone else

Ah I forgot

My mood has not heightened but still working in getting fired up after hump day for next week

I thought Shannon Boyd is a QLD’er?

One thing for sure is that we don't need any more size. I don't think Boyd is needed, he's contributing to the Raiders struggles defencively up the middle when fatigued and we struggle enough in that area on days where our backs don't help forwards and they tire.

We need a solid, agile, built yet small workhorse forward, not a large wrecking ball, you can only have so many. A Brenton Lawrence or Brent Kite type forward to keep the middle stable. Thompson has done a fine job stiffening up that edge although i'm growing concerned with Sironen. He's very on and off (moreso not involved) and isn't proving as useful as his potential suggests. I'd like a Tohu Harris type forward in his place if he doesn't improve, although now we've got to wait to see with his ACL. Really annoyed we've lost Tanginoa, he's a steady, useful forward we absolutely need

You got any news or additional info you can share on the salary cap snake?
I know we needed to be cleared in order to sign a half of any kind...Albert Kelly was floated but all of that was under the assumption that we get cleared and then dip into the market.

That obviously hasn't happened so the focus is now about re-signing the players we desperately want to keep (in order of priority) because that's all we can afford to do. Outside of that, we have to move players on in order to sign more. That might seem obvious, but that is the only way new recruits of any substance will be arriving at Manly in the next two to three years. If we want someone, we are going to have let someone else (on decent coin) leave.

Lussick is not happy at Manly and wants out. If he goes, it will be because we have found a replacement (we are at one in particular). I heard he was willing to stay if there was FG game time being offered, but that has obviously not happened so he is naturally still very keen to go.

Thanks snake.

Sounds like we are well and truly snookered if we don't win the appeal. I assume that is still going ahead.

Manly are keen to sign korbin sims for 19 from Broncos, also Tom Symonds could be back as soon as this year although a couple of other clubs also interested.

Tepai Moeroa is the only one I’d bother with from that pack.
I'd bother with him 3-4 years ago but he hasn't developed under Dalai...he has regressed. Definitely a lot of potential in the early days when he threw himself around but injuries have really held him back and now he plays with a much softer approach.

I would take the pay cheque and not bother putting in if I played for Arthur too

The reason the Eels are struggling is because of Arthur's intensity. He has mentally ****ed that group of players with way too much pressure to perform, constant nagging and unrealistic demands. Not one Eel is enjoying their football right now. When they were bounced out of the finals last year, Arthur lost it. He has taken the intensity and will to win too far.
