Memorable Footy Biffo's

Yes they are more like slap and push these days....can see why with the direction of modern sport casting out barbaric Biffo - but still don't mind a 1 on 1 settler myself...generally the players shook hands at the whistle and left it on the field !!
But personally loved a bitta Biff - many memorable moments over the years...
Keen to see ppls opinion on the brawls and the one's that stood out, that were a part of winning the middle in the Old school games....
Most recently the Gift /Blair fight had the crowd fired up....lets run off the field to the dressing rooms...NO - Lets start swinging!
Always a standout for me personally, as I was only about 10...was the NZ Heavyweight boxer we signed - Mark Broadhurst....fight breaks out against Newtown in a Final...our boxing champ quickly found out theres no ring on the footy field and copped a knockout headbutt from Big Bowden....Randall and Boyd ripped in for Manly and held their own - Newtown won the fight and game clearly though....took me a while to recover !!
Andrew Johns getting decked was also a classic - his Amazing footy ability gave him the idea he could fight...stick to footy son hahah
What other classic Biffo's have you got to add ??

Best ever was Dishhead Dowling and one of the Tamatis (Kevin ?) in a test match in Brisbane I think. Boiled over on the sideline after they were both sin binned and walked off together continuing the niggle.

I was there for that one Bowden got him multiple times and earlier Raudonikus took on Les Boyd straight from a touch restart .... Raudonikus ran up hit Boyd and they got the penalty!! Randall got sent off instead of Broadhurst !!

Tough encounter Nightster....I still flip it up on Youtube sometimes...that Bowden was brutal.....I felt it through the radio at the time and was expecting Broadhurst to dominate but hey, there was NO boxing ring that day - he was busted up bad!
I used to hate watching the replay knowing Manly had lost but of course can't help it, even worse we got beat up also!!
Boyd won me over in a team that was copping it - he just kept coming without fear...and Randall was made of iron......some big athletic boys these days, but when it comes down to raw toughness - these Old School boys were the real deal.

... sure were ... I was watching it through binoculars ... brutal ... but too much happening to know where to watch ... I was with my younger brother and surrounded by Newtown supporters ... but made it out alive

Arh Newtown, memories of Hensen Park and the delightful change rooms and dunnies in the king George V stand.

Gifty v Blair was awesome. I loved the mentality of our boys that night. You attack one of us, you attack us all. That all for one attitude that we had was awesome.

Eric grothe Jnr v hodges. The fight itself not great, but seeing hodges get belted was glorious. I think grothe became my favourite non manly player for about a year.

Other origin highlight...chief v Munster.

Think it was the mid 80s at Brookie.
I was at a game against Souths and all in started just behind the goalpost.
A mate and I were sitting on the front seats right were it happened

  • Danny Moore v John Hopoate

  • Cliffy Lyons v the trainer that hid his bungers before the '96 GF*

* creative licence has been applied, i.e. this may not have happened exactly as stated, i.e. it may not have happened at all, i.e. ok I lied but it would have been funny to watch

back to the Manly Newtown elimination final, from memory , which is sketchy at best, Manly blew it by mismanaging some rule because Vautin couldn't come on off the bench and i think they had rested him from reserves so he would be a fresh bencher

Back in the day it wasn't a game of footy until a fight broke out...

I was always taught to mesh "incorrectly" in the early scrums, just to get the opposite prop throwing punches. I got my ass kicked a lot lol..

Actually was at North Sydney at a similar stage in life and saw a good one spill over the sideline. Mark Pocock ran in with a big smile on his dial and started dishing it out all over the shop, laughing his head off. The good old days...

Stephen knight absolutely smashed mark Harris in front of the Sheridan stand in a semi final after a scrum win on the sideline

Fucn Harris did not know what hit him
Huge manly contingent in the stand all singing and cheering
Think 76
Not sure but it got the crown and the team fired right up

The best blew I ever seen was at Penrith Park in an Under 23 match. A local St Marys boy belted tripe out of an Eastern Suburb Rooster...his parentage are still recovering!
But I did see Big Dallas throw a good elbow into Neil Pringle at Lidcombe Oval....Neil slept well that night.
Steve Bowden punched the piss out of Broadhurst, but Igor got sent for a mis-directed kick that somehow found it's mark....apparently!
