Mark O'Meley's attitude.

(Take Test front-rower Mark O'Meley. He was told to take six weeks off after the recent Tri-Nations campaign and return in January.
"They told me to go home and freshen up, "O'Meley said.
To noone's great shock, O'Meley turned up to training on his first day off. Old school.)

Source - Telegraph Lift-Out.

I wonder if Steve Matai, Jamie Lyon, Brent Kite & Steve Menzies are also "old school"?

I read in the paper this morning that Jamie Lyon was out Monday night with Jersey Flegg players drinking all day, and one of his mates hit a bloke AND his girlfriend !!! @ Manly's cab rank at midnight!!! And that Jamie Lyon had to be peacemaker.

If you blokes were on the path to a good footballing career, and you "heard" that you were a great player etc. Knowing that you only had maybe 12 years tops in the game - would you sacrafice drinking. I know some would, some wouldn't, and it's not wrong either way - but I certainly would have...to get every bit of athletacism out of myself for those 12 years.

I worry about the culture at Manly lads:-

1. Steve Matai hit some guy at the Sands Hotel (potentially);
2. Jamie Lyon and Jersey Flegg player issue in Manly;
3. Anthony Watmough story in paper about his drinking problem;
4. The "mystery" Manly player getting in a brawl at Mona Vale Hotel;
5. Michael Bani coming from drugs and alcohol to Manly;

etc etc...

Then people question why Brent Kite has issues with the culture at Manly....

In my opinion, something needs to be changed.

The Roosters (I think it was them) have all agreed to a no grog policy. It's time we had some "old school" attitude at this club.

O'Meley is no clean skin trust me, didnt you read about Mark O'Meley and his brother getting into a biff in a club a few weeks ago?
To be honest he really needs to get back into the training, he was very dissapointing this year, and on both occaisions this year when we beat the Dogs, he was outclassed by Kite.

I think you are blowing this all out of proportion.
Correct me if i am wrong but werent you the same dude who wanted to "forgive and forget" Faumaina?

Mark O'Meley's attitude.

Sorry Ryan But I have to pull you up on a few things there.
Firstly Steve Mattai is a non drinker and by all accounts i have heard he doesn't have much to worry about in regards to the assualt charge.
The jersey flegg player issue is a bit more serious but you only have to go out any saturday night to realise that there are plenty of 20 yr olds who think they a **** hot add to the fact that this guy is a footballer and all of a sudden he is 10 ft tall and bulletproof and you are right if he is going to make it he needs to show more professionalism or i am sure he will have no trouble finding plenty of bar fights as the guy who could have been someone. To tie jamie lyon who was even according to the article only acting as a peace maker was the only way that the tele could make it remotely interesting because lets face this is not the first or last time there was a blue at manly at midnight. My comments on the above apply pretty aptly to anthony watmough too which thankfully for manly has realised that at 25 or so that it is time to grow up and can i say having ran pubs for a few years i can tell you there are plenty of people in the general public that take a lot longer to do this than that.

I d have to say that is a pretty long bow you are drawing in regards to Michael Bani though,like a lot of aboriginal kids by all accounts this kid has talent also like a lot of aboriginal kids there is a lot of pressure on them within there community with social issues such as alcahol and drugs but this guy has turned his back on that for a crack at the big time trust me there for every Michael Bani or Greg Ingliss there are thousands of more talented footballers who cant do that.

On the whole Manly have an excellent reputation for off field behaviour and professionalism

The club you are thinking of was South sydney with there no grog policy which was nothing more than Peter Holmes a Court grandstanding which i am not even sure whether they ended up signing off on.

As for the roosters for those in the know there reputation is the worst for off field professionalism which any of my eastern suburbs publican friends will attest

Looks as though Ryan has been shot down in flames here. :lol: :lol: :lol:

I concur with Pepi & SB .

Its just another fine example of a manufactured thread. The author is out choking straws as we speak !

Mark O'Meley's attitude.

I ignored the post to tell the truth!!! Another one of Ryan's glass half empty posts!!!!

To compare the culture of the Dogs to Manly .....

The footy season is a long one and to think that a few things that happen in Dec will make the difference is clutching at straws.

There was a no grog thing in play for the Rorters for a while but the social papers were full of stories of Mini, Wing and his mates in various waterholes all over the East. (Interesting implications though as to what training/mentoring is given to young players - NRL are regularly reminded of their responsibilities to sponsors etc)

My bg question is whether urban professionals on big bucks should have the same standards applied to them as the players. Do they get out on the grog, do things they might later regret etc? Do we apply the same standards to normal citizens as to players? :lol: :lol:

imo ryan, your making mountains out of molehills

Ryan you were condoning drug use by an Australian test player after the Melbourne Tri Nations game just over a month ago saying players should be able to enjoy themselves over the off season etc then you come up with this. Make up your mind on the matter.

Well said and I agree with you about the Roosters.
Just last year their captain Luke Rickertson was on the news banging on about how, "all the boys had gotten together and agreed to stay off the drink and out of night clubs." ....all for show...the next night he was spotted dancing on a table at 2.30am in the morning at the Fringe Bar in Oxford St.

His excuse was that he was only on the table to stop guys groping his backside.

another thing that just occured to me that speaks volumes of the culture of the club is that jamie lyon who is undeniably a superstar within the club was out socialising with the Jersey flegg players. It is something that would never happen at some more glamourous clubs. I know guys who have come through the Broncos and roosters juniors and to a lesser degree the knights who were mostly treated with contempt by management and the superstars within there respective clubs.

While the end result is obviously not good on this ocassion and without knowing exactly what happened Its hard to make any comment but there maybe soem signs that the culture is no where as bad as some people might like to make out

O'Meleys ex gf goes alright. Thats all I have to say on the matter.
I assume she is better looking than the current. Im no oil painting but ahhhh.

Wow - so many people to respond to, so here goes:-

Pepi - Yeah - O'Meley may not be a clean skin, and to be honest - I haven't read the article about him fighting, or I would not have used this as an example. It still doesn't detract from the fact that I think there is a poor culture @ Manly - people have elluded to it stating they KNOW Kite is not happy about it (whether that is true or not - don't ask me). I personally have seen King and co. down at Manly the night BEFORE a big game on the turps @ around midnight. I personally feel that that lets people like Kite & co. down on game day - so O'Meley or not, incidents like a Manly player hitting a woman - yes - dissapoints me. Hearing that Choc had a drinking problem (espescially the night before games), yes dissapoints me;

Tookey - I think The Dragons would review the situation with Naquama even after he was found guilty of murder. LoL. How many strikes CAN a player have?

Spuds Bodyguard - Thank you for your well thought out response. In regard to your 1st paragraph, I can see where your coming from. That said, all of this could be fixed with a well trained life coach. In todays game, and level of professionalism, surely the club would have an avid interest in their players personal lives. A small investment in this area could save no amount of long term trouble, and we all know a balanced & happy player means good football on the park.
In regards to Bani. It's frustrating to me that Manly give him a go (the paper said HIS life revolved around drugs and alcohol), but Grant Mayer comes out in the press about Faumuina, and Manly's non interest due to culture. I found that a tad hypocritical. We NEED players of this calibre, and like I said, surely a young man at a professional club can be moulded (in a way) to prosper both on and off the park. Players like Kite, and as you say Matai (who apparently doesn't drink) would be great role models to hang around. Look - to be honest, I hope Bani is an Inglis waiting in the wings too. It's not about him really, it's more to do with clulture...or does that culture exist for some, and not for others?
Also guys, I'm not saying DON'T drink. Just do so responsibly. Without hitting a relative in the back yard, without hitting a female at a cab rank etc etc..and that also means in my opinion, if a player wants to take drugs in the off season, do so, but do so responsibly (if that can be done).

Wheel - I know - CW just can't help himself. I'd hate to see him in Salem during the witch hunts. LoL.

Jatz Crackers - Kenneth? No _ I was going to leave it at that but how's this. It's the off season, and this thread created some healthy discussion about culture etc. I don't see many threads being created from the wise one. Be pro-active, not re-active, it's not becoming, and doesn't add value. You critique, and are derogatory, but don't add anything new. Instigate some of your opinion, so that we can debate that for goodness sakes. Don't just try and belittle people for their views. Surely there's more to your repitoire than that? Why are our debates always about each other rather than the team. I'm hoping you don't fancy me dude. LoL. But seriously - it's just boring now, and past the point. I refer you to Spuds response to understand how someone can disagree with a subject, and still get their points across in a fair manner.

Canteen Worker - Your reply was quite fair, apart from the 1st sentence. Despite that insult, I'll try and reply with a measure of politeness. Mate - I disagree - I believe a season can be won and lost in December. The effort, motivations, goals etc etc are pruned from these months. The standard is set in my opinion in January / February. Like stated above, I think a life coach would be a very healthy addition to this community in todays age.
I assure you - I'm not on "big bucks" as you say. I'd also like to say that absolutely nothing I do does any harm to any person whatsoever. I would NEVER raise a fist to a woman in ANY circumstance.

Disco - It's what I do !!! Hehehehe...

Garts - please refer to the back end of my reply to Spuds Bodyguard. My mind is quite satisfied in the fact that I believe there is a culture issue at Manly. "IF" drinking help the club professionally, then why not test that theory. If it's a life coach, then good too. I mean, it's not just drinking, it's gambling etc as well, a speads from football, to assisting youth to be better people all round. I don't just whinge about it. Itry and be pro-active about it as well. For example, last year I contacted the club after the gambling situation came to light with O'Sullivan, and I offered the club an opportunity to with any new player that came on to their roster (even the most junior juniors) to (for free) speak to one of our financial planners - instead of blowing all their money on the pokies (and yes, a lot DON'T do that I know). I just thought it was a value add from Manly management to their players (when discussing a contract for example), that may have helped some of their players. The club didn't get back to me, but I still thought it could have made a small difference. Test the stock market, not the pokies. I hope you see what I mean.

PJ & CLON - LoL about Rickertson and O'Meleys EX. LoL X 2.

Man..I've so got saw fingers now...LoL, and I hope I replied to all of you.

In advance - sorry to Fro for the spelling issues.
