Careful Manly guys...

beware the falling into the tackle bronco

"blow that whistle, ref"

The NRL has implemented an unprecedented crackdown on foul play with players and coaches warned players face instant sin-binning for any contact with the head of the opposition.

In an unapologetic response to ridding the game of foul play, the ARL Commission has declared that from tonight’s Magic Round opener, the game will be officiated under never before implemented rules that includes:

- Direct or forceful contact to head is sin bin at a minimum

- Indirect or forceful contact, possible sin bin

- If contact is minimal, then penalty and put on report

The policy has come directly from the commission as the game confronts the worrying issue of concussion and head knocks.
If lodge does one, they will just look him in the eye.

If its consistent (not holding my breath) this will be a good thing.
I'd also like to see players that are sin binned for an offence that causes injury to an opponent not be allowed back on the field, after 10 mins they can be replaced. Sick of seeing players return to the field after taking an opposition player out of the game.

Would be interested in knowing the NRL's definitions of "direct", "forceful" & "indirect" or are they once again leaving it up to the discretion of the refs?

If we are genuinely wanting to play finals and be a threat then we should be winning tonight.

Broncos won't be easy but if we play for the full 80 minutes we should win by 28 -14 sort of scoreline

I am nervous as hell but think we make a statement tonight and announce ourselves as a true contender.

If we do get beat tonight badly we don't deserve to be in the 8.

On the subject that the refs are cracking down on head high tackles...

Some of the posters on the broncos site are "I bet they do their usual thing and make an example outta brisbane!"

Ok, I know most fans think the refs are against them, but fmd... Bronco fans????

'Penalty Broncos'

(Unless they're stirring us with their wooden spoon, I dunno)

Only thing I can think of is direct would be first point of contact with the head, indirect would be first point of contact with the ball or another body part that later contacts the head. As for forceful, God only knows how they will determine that.

We better keep our tackles low tonight. Just tackle everything around the legs.

the last time the NRL brought in a new edict on a Friday was an hour before a Manly-Souths game at Brookie in 2015 around the shoulder charge which promptly rubbed out Willie Mason for crucial games against the Roosters and Parra that contributed to killing our momentum to the finals that year.

Let's not have any momentum killers tonight. Turbo or no Turbo we are not beating Brisbane will 12 or 11 men tonight and you know the officialdom will be looking to make a statement!

I'm honestly terrified about this new rule. There are going to be a lot more phantom concussions than real concussions as a result. Imagine, a player stays down for a slap and the team gets rewarded in 4 ways:

(1) Team is one closer to having a fresh 18th man
(2) They get a 10 minute binning of an opponent
(3) Get a fresh player to come on for the bloke staying down.
(4) The team gets a nice rest if they are under the pump in defence as the actor is taken from the field.

This game could become a joke and we could start seeing 80 point winning scores.

So was this announced this afternoon? Amateur hour.
Protecting the head is absolutely a good move.
Yet how notable that it occurs as soon as the Chooks cry foul/fowl over one of their men getting a bump. It's been going on for yonks but better act quick because Politis is on the phone.

I see what you did there ... a good yoke but nothing to crow about

"Indirect or forceful contact, possible sin bin"

So no one can tackle anyone?

Unless they mean indirect contact with the head, in which case, possible sinbin for an accidental knock seems stupid

I can't wait for them to sin bin someone who accidentally collides with his own teammate!! Quite a few of the head knocks are occurring by friendly fire, so if they are going to penalise accidents then they have to do it for your own team too.
