Manly Sea Eagles facing a $10 million embarrassment

TO state the obvious, times are tough at Manly.

Starting the season with two defeats after losing five on the trot to end 2016 has put the Sea Eagles on the verge of losing a club-record eight straight losses for the third time in its history.

Coaching in the NRL is a fickle game and second-year mentor Trent Barrett is finding that out firsthand as he tries to guide his troops to the finals for the first time in three years. To do that, he needs halfback Daly Cherry-Evans to fire.

It annoys me when ppl talk about his contract as some absurd number... 1.2 is about the going rate for marquee talents atm... Foz, tommy turbo, ponga all around the same figure... The length is what i find stupid and that works in Manlys favour.. In 5 years time when marquee names are getting paid 1.8-2mil a season and dce is still on 1.2 how absurd is his contract going to look then???

2 games and the media is teeing off on us as predicted.
There is a lot of hate for DCE. I hope he has the courage & conviction to with stand it.
Barrett has no clue, I wanted him to succeed, but the writing is on the wall. Nice bloke, understands the game to a certain degree....BUT no where near battle hardened enough and astute enough to live up to our club's legacy.

Do the deal with Des and let's get cracking (can't believe I want Des back after his bull****, but I will cut him some slack and believe he got shafted by sections of our board)

still pretty absurd for a 33 year old halfback who basically relies on speed to create anything.
by the time hes 33 he will be long gone mate... hes not loyal to manly, the minute top stars are om 1.5 n upwards he will pull the same sh$t he pulled in 2012 and get his manager to demand an immediate upgrade or he will walk... and unlike 2012 we will say see ya buddy

The key words in your post being "marquee talents".

Unfortunate DCE isn't a marquee talent.

As your rightly pointed out, players like Turbo are talents. Multiple line breaks. Do what needs to be done. Can win you games.... this isn't DCE.

DCE is dishing out equal performances to that of Green who was signed for $350k. This seems more appropriate. Not $1.2m.
To be fair, when that contract was negotiated he was the best 7 in the nrl bar maybe jt... Ball in hand he cut thru the d line with ease... Just cos hes been average the last 2 years doesnt take away the talents he showed from 2011-2014

I think you will find his contact increases as a % of the salary cap

Thats what im getting sick and tired of hearing mate , people whining about DCE's amount of money and he doesn't earn it. Well said bud.

i think he has it in him to lead us to another gf... once we cut more fat and invest snake/matai money into decent players around him, we will win another gf and everyone will think his pay is justified again... (but then, as i said earlier, he will want even more cash and take a walk)

Chez is the whipping boy of the Media and the QLD FOGs.:swear:

He could easily sue for defamation after all the hysterical front page covers the GC paper and Courier Mail had since he legitimately backflipped.:dollar:

imagined if he hadn't backflipped and he was made into a GC Bear by Florimo

We're not paying him for his past performances.
The club is paying him expecting those performances week in week out.

I absolutely hold DCE accountable for his $1.25m price tag plus the % increases.

Some may be sick of hearing it but when 20% of your cap is tied up in a player who continues (3rd year in a row) to dish up average performances it's no good for anyone involved.

As I said, I hope he regains form. I hope he lives up to the price tag because when you sign the biggest deal in the history of the sport - that's the kind of expectation and criticism you sign up for.

I'd drop him to ressies to try and wake him up.
Or move him to 9 to try something.

Anything.... but after 2 rounds he appears to have changed little from the form that's lead us to the bottom 8 two years in a row.
i understand that, but which of the alternatives at the time would have suited you better?? lose dce and foran both and have no halves and likely a wooden spoon, or throw the 1.2 at foz instead and deal with his bullsh@t, restulting in no halves and probably a spoon?

Someone more detail oriented than me will know but I thought it was constructed as a set percentage of the cap.

you could be right, i just figured with every article talking about this 10mil over 8 years contract that it was a set price... thats how i always read it anyway

Not sure if that's a trick question?...
I'd prefer have neither.

He unfortunately hasn't brought anything to the table worth keeping (for $1.25m) that I have seen yet. In my opinion there are dozens of other halves I would prefer.

Perhaps for $5-600k maybe DCE serves a purpose but certainly not $1.25m for 8yrs.
8yrs makes him the focal point of our squad that entire time and I just don't see how anyone can say he's even remotely living up to that price tag.
Combined with the fact that $500k Myles was a sweetener we've tied up $2m in players all for Chez but we haven't see the form like you mentioned from 3/4yrs ago.

I really hope he can live up to the price tag at some point, he's a talented kid in little spurts, but I haven't seen anything different this year to last year or the year before.
i agree with u 100% that hes yet to live upto the expectations.. all i was getting at was that at the time of his negotiations, he was worth that money based on his past seasons and his form at the time... and i believe, even if he isnt living upto ot at the moment, giving him a big deal over a decent period of time was the best course of action... But i too want to see him step up and play alot better than he currently is

So $1.25 mil for DCE. Say $1.25 mil for Snake Matai and whoever else we're still paying conteact money for who isnt here. Then Myles and Brown say $700k. So that's over $3 mil of a $7mil cap soaked up by 3 non performers and 2 injured retirees. Does anyone now wonder why we are deadsht last. What a wonderful recruitment record that is !!!!
